Council 550 Giving Back to Our Community! 💚

Yesterday, we held our semi-annual Adopt a Road Cleanup & Volunteer Appreciation Picnic.

Our dedicated volunteers rolled up their sleeves and helped clean up four roads throughout Carroll County, covering one road in each district.

🛣️ Trevanion Road
🛣️ Cape Horn Road
🛣️ Oklahoma Road
🛣️ Kate Wagner Road

This cleanup was especially meaningful because, in addition to our hardworking Council 550 volunteers, we were excited to welcome a Carroll County resident who joined us in giving back to the community!

👏 A Special Thank You To:

💚 Our Council 550 Volunteers - For generously donating your time and energy to help keep Carroll County beautiful!

💚 Marilyn Miller, President of MCEA - For your continued support and involvement!

💚 Megan Foelber - Carroll County Citizen - Thank you for stepping up and joining our volunteers! Your willingness to give back to your community is truly appreciated!

💚 Westminster City Parks & Recreation - Thank you for allowing us to use your pavilion for our semi-annual picnic. It is always a wonderful opportunity for everyone to relax, enjoy some food, and spend time together after a productive cleanup!

Council 550 is about more than representing employees. It’s also about supporting the communities where we live, work, and serve. 💪

We are proud of our volunteers and grateful to everyone who helped make this event a success!

**First Responder to the First Responder: DPW Edition**

Nobody calls us first responders. But who’s first out when the storm hits?

The truth about Public Works is, we don't run into burning buildings. We clear the road so the trucks *can* get to the burning building.

We’re out at 2 a.m. in a nor’easter when everyone else is told to stay home. Plowing, salting, chains on, coffee gone cold. You can’t see the lines on the road, but you keep going because if you don’t, the ambulance doesn’t make it. The fire truck doesn’t make it.

The truth is, our emergencies don’t make the news. A tree down across a road at midnight. A washed-out culvert. A water main break flooding someone’s basement on Christmas Eve. We’re there with the loader, the backhoe, the shovel, in the rain, in the mud, getting it done.

People will complain the road wasn’t plowed fast enough. That the brush wasn’t picked up. That we blocked their driveway with snow. They don’t see the 16-hour shift. The frozen gloves. The back aching from asphalt in 95-degree heat.

You’ll miss the same birthdays, the same holidays as any cop or firefighter. Your phone rings and you go — because drains don’t care it’s Sunday.

And yeah, we joke in the yard. Dark humor, busting chops. That’s how you get through the grind.

The hardest truth? We’re invisible until something breaks. Then everyone wants to know where DPW is.

So this is for the ones in hi-vis, not turnout gear. In a John Deere hat, not a helmet. Hands on a loader, not a hose.

We are the first responder *to* the first responders. We open the way.

That’s the truth. Not flashy. Just real. And it matters.

A BIG thank you to the City of Westminster for supporting Carroll County Council 550! ❤️

Fall Fest may have been a very wet one — and Sunday’s festivities may have been canceled — but that didn’t stop so many people from stopping by our booth!

We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who showed their support by signing our petition, lending an ear, asking questions, and taking the time to learn more about what we do.

From all of us at the Carroll County Department of Public Works — thank you, Westminster! We truly appreciate your support! 🙌

🇺🇸 NEVER FORGET — 9/11/2001 🇺🇸

Today we remember September 11, 2001 — a day that forever changed our nation.

We remember the innocent lives lost, the families who were left behind, and the countless heroes who ran toward danger while others were running away.

We honor the firefighters, police officers, EMS, military members, and everyday Americans who showed extraordinary courage and compassion that day.

25, years later, we still remember. We still honor. We will never forget.

🇺🇸 September 11, 2001 — Never Forgotten.

🚨📢 Employee Update – Important Concerns & Request for Dialogue 📢🚨

As of today, August 5, no one has reached out to any of us regarding these concerns.

In previous discussions, we were told that we would simply have to “agree to disagree” and that there would be no changes made to restore the benefits that were removed. We were also told that the changes implemented were intended to be positive. However, despite those assurances, we have yet to see the positive impact these changes were meant to provide.

One of our primary concerns remains the loss of overtime opportunities during certain weeks of the year due to holiday scheduling changes. Holidays are no longer counted as hours worked toward overtime eligibility. We understand that this may be common practice in many private-sector workplaces. However, when the vast majority of us accepted employment with Carroll County Government, this was a longstanding benefit that played a significant role in our decision to work in public service.

Moving forward, we remain hopeful that we will be given the opportunity to meet and have an open, productive discussion about these concerns. We believe there is still an opportunity to resolve not only this issue but also several other benefits that have been taken away over time.

We also have a sincere concern that the full scope of these issues may not be reaching the Commissioners. For that reason, we respectfully request the opportunity to meet with them directly so they can hear firsthand how these changes have affected the employees they serve.

We appreciate everyone who has been following and supporting our efforts to bring attention to these concerns and work toward positive change with the Board of County Commissioners. If you are following our journey, please consider liking and sharing this message to help ensure these issues continue to be seen and heard.
