Flooding and damage caused by Hurricane Matthew.

On October 4th a category 4 hurricane battered the island of Ile-a-Vache, Haiti with 145 mph winds and nearly 40 inches of rain. Our Grand Sable school was damaged during the storm.

Our school which was built in 2009 and approved by the Haitian government provides free education to over 300 local children. Last week the teachers had to send the students home for the day because "investors" who desire to acquire land on the island tried to stake their claim to our school and surrounding property. The land for the school was purchased through a legal private party sale and approved by the local government. Our school is registered with the Haitian Ministry of Education yet now we have to fight for the right to educate the native inhabitants of the island.
Within minutes of the arrival of the "investors" hundreds of parents and villagers gathered to express their displeasure with the "investors" interruption of the school day. The people of Ile-a-Vache won that day as the "investors" were turned away. But their resources are limited and their voices do not reach beyond the island. Please read and share this post and article so that the voices of the people of Ile-a-Vache can be heard. Thanks.

Before Haiti’s Prime Minister declared all of Haiti’s offshore islands to be Zones of Tourism Development and Public Utility, he did not consult with the residents of the islands whose lands would be appropriated. Instead Mr. Laurent Lamothe went to a favorite online magazine in December 2012, to pr...

Hurricane Sandy caused extensive flooding and wind damage, destroying much of Haiti’s fragile agriculture system, including Ile-a-Vache, which bore the brunt of Sandy’s impact in Haiti. Preliminary figures estimate that 70% of the food crop was destroyed. The aftermath of Sandy coupled with rising global food prices will have a devastating effect on Haiti’s food security.

Over the years Hope For Haiti has focused on training local farmers and supporting sustainable agriculture projects on the island. Our local Haitian staff and volunteers have already begun preparations to plant flood tolerant crops and trees, and increase the usage of green manure. We have come to realize that these types of storms may be the new norm in the region. We need your help to raise additional funds to share these practices with other local farmers. During the upcoming months HFH will train local farmers, provide seeds, training and other resources to help prepare their farms for future storms and floods. By supporting local food security you are empowering the local communities by providing them with control of their own food supply, providing jobs and income to the local farmers and farm workers, and creating a sense of pride in the community as they transition away from reliance on foreign food aid.
