Thanks to Mary Young was kind enough to open her farm gate and allow us access to the top of Molly Osborne Shoals (her great, great great grandmother’s name)so the NRX crew could run the Molly Osborne Shoals twice and also Penitentiary Shoals.

This morning's NRX view from Zaloo's Canoes, Kayaks & Tubes Outpost in Grassy Creek, NC. The crew continues its way downstream, following the flow of the New as it heads North into Virginia, then dips back into North Carolina, then heads North again.

We are so grateful to our 6 hardy volunteers that hauled out 1,200 pounds of trash, and debris including 12 tires, 9 studded fence post, 5 yards of barbed wire, an old kitchen sink, and 8 bags of assorted trash between the Twin Bridges to Timber Ridge Campground in Fleetwood, NC. this past Saturday on the South Fork of the New River.

Unfortunately, our intrepid Clean Up Coordinator, Will Sowards, for the first time ever, lost his phone in the river, which means the photos he took are on the bottom. So you get stick people volunteers.

He says " If anyone paddles this section please keep an eye out for my phone somewhere past the Twin Bridges near the elodea patch! Thank you to all the volunteers and landowners who made this trip possible! The 12 tires we got put a small dent in the 40 we counted after the boats filled up."

It's not always paddle, paddle, paddle for the MRX26. Some days there's a bit of fun - fishing in the clear New River under clear blue skies. Does it get any better? What's your favorite place to fish on the New?

Celebrating Land Trust Day - June 6- in partnership with in Boone, NC, increases awareness of the role of the New River Conservancy and landowners in protecting the waters, woodlands, wildlife and waters of the New River basin.

NRC staff Emily Broussard (shown) & Anna Hilting were on hand to talk about our work & help kids plant their own wildflowers. Mast provided us with potting soil, compostable plant pots and wildflower seeds as a planting activity for children.

The New River Conservancy has worked with landowners to protect nearly 10,000 acres of land and over 100 miles of New River and tributaries and has added over 1,700 acres of land to the New River State Park.

We are grateful to Mast General Store, as well as the many customers who came out on Saturday to support land conservation.

Abbey Mays joined the crew over the weekend and joins them as they push off from the Wagoner Access at New River State Park. Ann Rose and pup Ayla will be traveling alongside the crew in our van as support in shuttling, portage and moral booster with puppy snuggles.

New River Conservancy is excited to participate in the 13th Annual with Community Foundation of the New River Valley , which harnesses the generosity of the New River Valley community by raising funds and awareness for nonprofits serving our region during the month of June.

This year we are hoping to raise $5,000 to help support the riparian buffer restoration work on Tract Fork at the Calfee Community and Cultural Center in the Town of Pulaski, Va. Tract Fork, meandering almost 9 miles through Pulaski, is a tributary of Peak Creek, which flows into the New River at Claytor Lake. Tract Fork is severely eroded and will continue to be without help.

Through partnership with the Calfee Community & Cultural Center, Friends Of Peak Creek,Inc. and community members like you, we will restore the ecosystem and the riparian area surrounding the Calfee Center. The rendering is a vision of what Tract Fork could be with your help.

The NRX crew made their way around Bunk's Bridge in in Fleetwood, NC on the South Fork of the New River last week. You might remember that volunteers placed the biggest tree and some of the woody debris on the eroded bank, which you can see here. The water was high enough to paddle around, so portage wasn't necessary. A gift to the team as these boats are loaded!

Look at that crystal clear water ! The water is pretty fine - even better than pre-Helene - take a trip on the New soon.

A happy, happy birthday to our Database Coordinator, Jeannette Pozo Valdes, without whom we would all be lost, and some of us would be very confused. A native Floridian, Jeannette moved with her husband to Ashe County and the New River watershed.

In 2022, Jeannette decided to come out of retirement and join the staff at New River Conservancy and now works as the Database Coordinator for the NRC. Prior to joining the staff at New River Conservancy, Jeannette retired from a 34-year career in federal law enforcement with the United States Customs Service, where she was awarded the United States Customs Ensign. A great honor, the “Ensign” is the U. S. Customs Service Flag, which is flown over the United States Capital in honor of an employee who has retired with an exemplary career and has served the agency with honor.

Jeannette always has a smile on her face and in her voice and is one of the people who make the New River Conservancy run so well. If you see her today about and about in West Jefferson, tell her we said "Happy Birthday!"
