Soul Studio is an art studio for adults with special needs that responds to each participant's unique physical and cognitive conditions. Our goal is to encourage the creative growth of artists who attend Soul Studio by helping to shape individualized paths to success in the world through drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, photography, digital arts, weaving, and woodworking. In the middle of a painting session, I looked at my canvas and said, “I don’t like this… yet.”

Carlie clocked that and ask her “Are you practicing what you preach?”

They were right!

At Soul Studio, we remind each other that it’s okay not to love your work yet. You can be honest about the messy middle and still keep going.

On the hard days, remember: practice what you preach, take a breath, and give yourself a little more “yet.”

Megan let us take a peek at her sketchbook, where every artwork begins.

Between the drawings and colorful pages, we found little reminders like "Yes You Can," a motto that seems to guide everything she does.

We should all be a little more like Megan: creative, living out loud, and making the world brighter through her art and kindness.

At the opening of You Matter, we asked artists, supporters, volunteers, and community members why Soul Studio matters to them. Their answers were different, but they all pointed to the same thing: Everyone deserves a place where they matter.

For some, it's a place to create. For others, it's a place to belong. It's a second home. A place to be yourself. A place where friendships grow, creativity flourishes, and artists can share their work with the world. For volunteers, it's a bright spot in the week. For our artists, it's a space where they feel seen, valued, and inspired.

We keep catching people smiling in front of the dog ceramics at the gallery. Each pup in You Matter is modeled, glazed, wrapped, or felted with so much personality that you can almost hear them bark. 🐶

You’ll find them alongside ceramics, drawings, textiles, storybooks, and more by over 36 Soul Studio artists. Every piece is a little portrait of its maker’s voice.

If one of these dogs (or another piece) tugs at your heart, take it home and directly support the artist and the creative community behind them. Visit You Matter before the exhibition closes in early September so you don’t miss your favorite new studio companion.

The gallery is all set up, now all we need is YOU!

Tomorrow at 5 pm, we have the opening of You Matter - our newest exhibition at The Soul Gallery, Dedicated in Memory of Burton and Gerry Rissman.

You Matter is personal, honest, playful, emotional, and deeply human. As you move through the exhibition, you’ll step into different worlds and perspectives, with each artwork offering a glimpse into the artist and the stories they choose to share.

For our You Matter exhibit, three artists created one-of-a-kind Star pop-up books that invite you into their worlds.

Megan filled her book with abstract explorations, like a visual journal of color and motion. Caryn and Ari crafted narrative scenes of joy, animals, and everyday magic, each page literally popping with art and life.

Join us on May 14th for the opening celebration to turn these pages in person, explore each story, and celebrate their creative journeys with us. See you soon!
