Jewish Frontline Statement on the Planned Dearborn Demonstration
In response to the planned demonstration in Dearborn, Jewish Frontline wants to make our position clear.
We are proud Zionists and proud American patriots. We do not align with Christian nationalism, white nationalism, antisemitism, anti-Muslim bigotry, or movements that define American identity in ways that exclude other Americans.
But rejecting one form of extremism cannot require silence about another.
Islamist extremism is real, and Michigan is not immune. Earlier this year, an attacker attempted a mass-casualty attack against Temple Israel while children were inside. The FBI determined that the attack was Hezbollah-inspired and deliberately targeted Michigan's Jewish community.
We call on Dearborn-area civic, religious, and community leaders to unequivocally confront extremist elements and rhetoric. Hezbollah and Hamas are terrorist organizations. Support for terrorism, glorification of political violence, and antisemitism cannot be minimized or rationalized.
When these elements go inadequately challenged, they provide an opening for outside extremists to exploit legitimate concerns and bring further confrontation into our communities.
Dearborn's leadership cannot control who comes to demonstrate in their city. It can make unmistakably clear where it stands against extremism.
Confronting Christian nationalism does not require ignoring Islamist extremism, and confronting Islamist extremism does not require embracing Christian nationalism.
Michigan should reject both, unequivocally.
