You know the mountain.

You probably know the four faces.

But do you know the Mason behind them?

Gutzon Borglum, the sculptor who created Mount Rushmore, was a Freemason associated with Howard Lodge No. 35 in New York.

He was also a Worshipful Brother.

That means one of the largest and most recognizable pieces of American monumental art was conceived by a man who also understood another kind of building.

Washington. Jefferson. Lincoln. Roosevelt.

Somewhere behind all that granite, a Brother with a very big set of working tools!

Jaws has more Masonic connections than you’d expect. 🦈

Richard Dreyfuss, who played Matt Hooper, later became a Master Mason in 2011.

The distinctive Amity Police diamond patch has become a favorite among movie-prop collectors, especially those who notice its fraternal-looking geometry.

Then there are the real historical pieces: antique shark-tooth fobs engraved with the Square and Compasses, made during an era when plenty of sailors and sea captains were Brothers.

Hollywood, Freemasonry and a shark tooth.

That is one strange rabbit hole. ⚓

Today in Masonic History, July 25, 1751 was the formation of the Antients Grand Lodge of England. DID YOU KNOW?

The Ancients Grand Lodge of England (officially the Most Ancient and Honourable Fraternity of Free and Accepted Masons), formed in London on July 17, 1751, was a rival to the original 1717 Premier Grand Lodge of England. Primarily driven by Irish immigrants in London, it sparked a 60-year schism in English Freemasonry.

The Ancients accused the 1717 Grand Lodge of deviating from original traditions, abbreviating rituals, and "de-Christianizing" ceremonies. Because the Ancients claimed they preserved the true, original customs, they labeled the 1717 Grand Lodge as the "Moderns" and themselves as the "Antients".

The 62-year schism ended on December 27, 1813, when the two Grand Lodges merged to create the United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE). Interestingly, many of the ritual forms and traditions championed by the Ancients were the ones adopted by the newly unified body.
