Ward Daniels - Field Representative, Indiana LEAN Committee Representative

Ward has been in recovery since July 1, 2001, and remains actively involved in Alcoholics Anonymous. Having personally experienced the struggles of working as a Laborer while battling alcoholism and drug addiction, he understands the hopelessness that members may feel.

“We want to help our Laborers…a job, good wages, good benefits…why wouldn’t we want to help with their mental health, drug addiction, and alcoholism? That’s where the power is in LIUNA…being a brotherhood and sisterhood.”

Ward Daniels has been a proud member of Laborers Local 120 for over 33 years. He previously served as Business Manager of Local 120 for 13 years, dedicating his career to advocating for and supporting fellow Laborers.

When members know that professional, confidential support is available when they need it, they take advantage of it. Dylan Gramlich recalls getting four calls from struggling members 12 hours after they launched the program.

Dylan Gramlich - Iowa, Nebraska, South-Dakota LEAN Representative, LiUNA Local 177

Dylan Gramlich is a 4th generation Laborer and proud member of Local 177 in Des Moines, Iowa. Outside of his Union and professional work, Dylan is a recovering alcoholic who began his recovery journey in February of 2024 and has maintained sobriety since June 24, 2025.

“The two things that never left me were my family and my union.”

His experience in recovery continues to shape his commitment to personal growth, accountability, and service to others. Through the sharing of our mutual experiences and struggles with addiction and other types of adversity, we are able to recover loudly instead of suffering and dying quietly.

Members facing substance abuse and mental health struggles don’t usually run to the union hall to report what they’re dealing with. Diana Marburger speaks to the fact that just because the issue isn’t talked about doesn’t mean it’s not there.

Ready to hear the whole conversation? The full LEAN Roundtable discussion will be available Thursday, October 22. Stay tuned!
