Washington state is recognizing a Month of Remembrance for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and People.

Working together with Tribes and the Legislature, our state has taken significant steps to address this systemic issue.

As Attorney General, my team and I implemented the MMIWP Task Force, and successfully proposed legislation creating the MMIWP Cold Case Unit to provide more resources to the investigation and prosecution of cases involving Indigenous victims. The unit obtained its first conviction in a cold case last year, bringing closure to a family that had waited nearly a decade for answers.

We also created the first-in-the-nation statewide alert system to help identify and locate missing Indigenous women and people, in partnership with Rep. Debra Lekanoff. 220 Indigenous people have been reported missing by law enforcement since we established the alert system.

The crisis is far from over. We still have work to do on this critical issue. We are committed to pursuing justice for Indigenous people and supporting efforts to bring every loved one home.
