From the Independent Book Publishers Association: H.R. 7661, a federal censorship bill, has advanced out of committee and is headed for a vote in the US House of Representatives.
This bill makes it clear that book banning is not about evaluating the content or merits of particular books—it is using policy to isolate, target, and discriminate against under-represented people and communities.
Through vague and expansive language, H.R. 7661 would disproportionately target books for children and teens that include any LGBTQIA2+ characters or content. Labeling Q***r people’s existence in age-appropriate books as “sexually oriented” is both offensive and dangerous. If this discrimination is allowed to stand, it establishes a precedent that threatens all forms of diverse representation, leaving only the narrow perspectives of people in power.
