Happy Juneteenth from PCMDC! ❤️🖤💚

Today we celebrate freedom, resilience, culture, history, family, and community.

Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865, the day enslaved Black people in Galveston, Texas were finally informed of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.

For generations, Black communities honored the day with shared meals, music, storytelling, church gatherings, laughter, games, and joy passed from one generation to the next.

And today, we continue that tradition together.

Here in Appalachia, Black history IS Appalachian history. It lives in our families, our elders, our music, our food, our stories, and our community care for one another.

So today we honor.
We celebrate.
We rise.

Wishing everyone a joyful, meaningful, and love-filled Juneteenth from all of us at the Pigeon Community Multicultural Development Center.

Come celebrate freedom, history, resilience, culture, and community with us.

We’ll have food on the grill, music playing, crafts for the kids, games, red treats, and space to simply be together.

Juneteenth has always been about more than a date.

It’s about people gathering anyway.
Celebrating anyway.
Building joy anyway.

So pull up.
Bring a friend.
Bring a side dish.
Bring your whole beautiful self.

Black history is Appalachian history too.

Black families have lived, worked, organized, farmed, cooked, worshipped, taught, created music, and built community in these mountains for generations.

Juneteenth belongs here too.

For many years, early Juneteenth celebrations happened quietly in homes, churches, and close-knit communities.

Today, the celebration has grown nationwide, creating space for Black people to celebrate themselves more fully, openly, and proudly.

At PCMDC, we believe community celebrations matter because people deserve places where history is honored and joy can live out loud.

So come celebrate with us.

🎲 games
🎶 music
🍔 food
🌞 outdoor fun
❤️ community connection

Parents, grandparents, cousins, neighbors, kids, and chosen family are all welcome.

One of the most beautiful parts of Juneteenth has always been generations gathering together:
sharing stories,
passing down traditions,
laughing,
eating,
and celebrating freedom as a community.

Bring a chair.

Why are there so many RED foods at Juneteenth celebrations? ❤️🍓🍉

Red has long been an important color in Juneteenth traditions.

It represents resilience, sacrifice, survival, strength, and the bloodshed endured throughout generations of Black history.

That’s why many Juneteenth tables are filled with:
🍉 watermelon
🍓 strawberries
❤️ red velvet cake
🥤 strawberry soda
🍒 punch
🔥 barbecue

Food has always been part of the story.

Not just survival food.
Celebration food.

The kind of food that says:
“We are still here.”

One of the things we love most about our Summer Enrichment Program is that kids learn by DOING.

This summer our students will work together to:
🧱 design structures
🧱 solve engineering challenges
🧱 practice teamwork
🧱 communicate ideas clearly
🧱 build, fail, rebuild, and try again

Lego are going to be a huge part of that learning this year.

And while we’ve gathered what we can, we still need more building materials to make these activities possible for all age groups.

If your family has extra Lego you’d be willing to donate, we would be incredibly grateful.
