Peggy has three feet, four legs, and absolutely no intention of being anything less than the center of your universe.

This 2-year-old tabby girl is affectionate, confident, and very committed to getting what she wants. She gives excellent head bonks, makes the gentlest biscuits, and has perfected the art of silently judging your every decision.

Here's Peggy's fun icebreaker fact: she was born without her back right foot! She has four legs, three feet, and gets around just as easily as her four-footed friends. Since she's been this way from the start, it's simply part of what makes Peggy Peggy. She doesn't let it slow her down, and she certainly doesn't need anyone making a big deal about it.

She's also successfully lived with both dogs and other cats, so she's no stranger to sharing her space with other four-legged housemates.
Peggy is looking for a home where she can hand out head bonks, supervise household activities, and receive the appropriate amount of admiration. Preferably a lot. She's not unreasonable, but she does have standards.

Help us build a little winter protection for outdoor cats! 🐾

Join us this Saturday, November 7th, from 11 AM–1 PM for our Winter Cat Shelter Workshop at Sarge’s!

As temperatures drop, outdoor cats need safe, warm places to escape the cold. We’ll be putting together insulated shelters to help provide some much-needed protection for cats in our community.

What can you bring?

We’re asking everyone to bring their own plastic storage tote, preferably around 30 gallons in size, with a lid. We’ll have some supplies available for those who aren’t able to bring their own, but we do need tote donations to help make as many shelters as possible!

Other ways to help:

Donate Lowe’s gift cards so we can purchase additional materials and supplies.

Pick up an extra storage tote during your next shopping trip and bring it along.

Spread the word to friends and family who might want to help!

Every tote, roll of insulation, and gift card helps us make a difference for outdoor cats facing the winter months.

Let’s make sure a few more cats have somewhere warm to go this winter!

It’s that time of year again. The season of giving, spreading joy, and showing up for the causes that make our communities a little better. And today, the Mountain Xpress Give! Local campaign officially kicks off!

Give! Local is an annual fundraising campaign highlighting nonprofits across Western North Carolina and encouraging year-end giving to support the organizations doing important work right here at home. We’re incredibly grateful to have been selected to participate alongside so many wonderful nonprofits making a difference in our region.

And this year, we have some especially exciting news. An anonymous donor has generously offered to match donations to Sarge’s up to $15,000 throughout the Give! Local campaign! That means your donation can go twice as far in helping us care for the animals who need us. Every dollar you give through Give! Local will help us make the most of this incredible matching opportunity.

Last year, thanks to your kindness and generosity, we raised just over $30,000 through this campaign. That support made a real difference for the animals in our care, and we’re hoping to build on that momentum this year with your help.

The campaign starts TODAY and runs through the end of the year, giving you plenty of time to make a year-end gift that goes even further for the animals who depend on us.

We’re here to clear the air on some common misconceptions about shelter pets and adoption!

November is National Senior Pet Adoption Month, and we’d like to take a moment to appreciate the pets who have a little more life experience under their collars.

Senior pets come with some pretty special features. Gray muzzles, frosted eyebrows, cloudy eyes, a little extra creak when they get up, and the kind of wisdom that comes from having seen a thing or two.

Some seniors act their age. Others will have you questioning whether their paperwork is accurate. They might be perfectly content lounging in the comfiest spot in the house, joining you for daily hikes, balancing your checkbook, or wondering why nobody has a landline anymore.

Whatever their age, they deserve loving homes just as much as their younger counterparts. They still have plenty of love to give, personalities to share, and memories left to make. They deserve to spend their golden years feeling safe, special, loved, and like they matter.

Some of the senior pets who find their way into our care arrive because their previous families recognize that a different home may give them the best chance at a better life moving forward. Others have endured hardships we may never fully know. But we don’t believe their past should define their future. Their personalities, individual needs, and all the little things that make them them are what will help us find their next forever.

A gray muzzle doesn’t mean they’ve run out of adventures. A few extra birthdays don’t mean they’ve run out of love. And being a little older certainly doesn’t mean they’re any less deserving of someone choosing them.

This November, consider making room for a senior pet. They may not be the youngest faces in the room, but they have just as much to offer, and they’d really like to know what it’s like to be someone’s favorite again.

Today kicks off Shelter Staff Appreciation Week, and we’re celebrating the people who keep Sarge’s running, growing, learning, and doing everything we can for the animals who come through our doors.

Our team works hard every day to make sure our cats and dogs receive thoughtful, individualized care and are set up for success in their future homes. That means getting to know each pet, learning their quirks and personalities, figuring out what helps them thrive, and preparing them for their next chapter.

Sarge’s has several departments, but most of our staff wear multiple hats. We jump in where we’re needed, share what we learn, support one another, and work together toward something bigger than any one of us. We’re proud of the quality of care we provide, the attention we give each animal, and the teamwork that makes it all possible.

Rescue work takes a lot of heart, a lot of hard work, and occasionally the ability to do 47 things at once. We’re incredibly proud of the people who show up for our animals and each other every single day.

And while our team spends the week making sure everyone else is taken care of, we wouldn’t mind returning the favor.

October brought plenty of new beginnings to Sarge’s, with happy homecomings, new arrivals, and lots of lives moving in the right direction. Every pet has a story, and this month, quite a few got to start a brand-new chapter.

Here’s what our community helped make happen:

🐾 43 pets adopted and off to enjoy life with their new families.

🐾 11 pets in Foster-to-Adopt, already settling into home life while they finish their spay/neuter appointments or vaccine series.

🐾 30 new pets welcomed into our care throughout the month, each getting a fresh opportunity for a brighter future.

🐾 4 pets rehomed through our Courtesy Rehoming Page, connecting directly with new families without needing to enter the shelter.

From the pets just arriving to the ones heading home, every story is another reminder of what a community can accomplish when it shows up for animals.

Thank you to everyone who adopted, fostered, volunteered, donated, shared, and cheered these pets along. You helped make October a pretty great month around here.
