Bring Your Own Bag Haywood

Bring Your Own Bag Haywood Paper or Plastic? Cloth, thank you. If you want to help save the planet by doing something tangible right here in Haywood County, contact us.

In an effort to reduce and eliminate single use plastic bags, a group of people from Outdoor Mission Community and area churches will be sewing cloth bags to distribute free at local food outlets. You DO NOT need to be a seamstress, tailor, or experienced crafter to participate. We need cutters, folders and distributors too!

Volunteers are still making reusable shopping and wine bags as well as reusable "swiffers," and makeup remover pads all from repurposed materials. Sometimes we give them away, sometimes we ask for donations, and sometimes we sell them as a fundraiser. Sewing days are approximately once a month. BYOBH is a project of the new Environmental Action Community of WNC (EAC), a non-profit whose mission is to, "create opportunities to experience the outdoors, respond to climate challenges, and promote a resilient mountain environment." Check out our website at www.eacwnc.org which is under construction so check back regularly.

BYOBH is still an active project of the former Outdoor Mission Community and WNC Climate Action Coalition. The new, blended non-profit organization is called Environmental Action Community of WNC (EAC). Sat, Feb 4, we will be selling reusable cloth and feed & seed bags as a fund raiser for the new organization. Come over to the Smoky Mountain Event Center, Dogwood Building and support this organization. Stay tuned for the public introduction of EAC to the community sometime in the coming months.

Since January we've had: twelve Bag-Making Days with two more coming up and seven Bag-Giveaway Days as we seek to reduce and eventually eliminate plastic bags from Haywood County's landscape and waterways. We've given away nearly 1000 homemade bags and some 1400 reusable retailer's bags. People are saving feed & seed sacks for us to be made into reusable shopping bags.

One of our biggest hurdles? Many many people say they have bags in their car or at home and just forgot them. Help us figure out how to solve this dilemma!

**July is Plastics-Free Month**
With the goal of eliminating single-use plastic bags from Haywood County, WNC Climate Action Coalition and OMC are sponsoring a documentary, The Story of Plastic will be shown at Canton Library, 11 Pennsylvania Ave., Canton, on Tuesday, July 12th, at 6pm. Look for a follow-up event on July 26th with resources about what YOU can do to care for God’s creation.

Others committed to this goal are preparing feed & seed bags for an assembly line, bag-making process in early fall. And we have cloth bag kits made for people who want to sew now. Stay tuned for bag-making and giveaway days coming.
