DC Central Kitchen combating hunger - creating opportunity
(339)

Founded in 1989 in protest of traditional charity models, the organization uses career training, job creation, and sustainable business practices to strengthen local food systems and reduce disparities in health and economic opportunity. The Kitchen’s life-changing social ventures include providing culinary job training to at-risk adults, turning wasted food into balanced meals for shelters and nonprofits, and serving healthy, scratch-cooked meals in low-income schools.

From recovering food during our first days in operation 37 years ago to gleaning thousands of pounds of produce from local farms, accepting tens of thousands of pounds of donated freshwater salmon, and using Leanpath food waste tracking technology to understand and reduce food waste in our kitchens today, DC Central Kitchen strives to be an environmentally responsible business committed to sustainability practices on and every other day of the year!

Lots of programs—including DC Central Kitchen’s Culinary Job Training program—do something called outreach: connecting with potential students and partners by getting out in the community, building relationships, and attending accessible events. But we also do ‘in-reach’ – finding ways inside of correctional facilities and prisons in order to identify, encourage, and advocate for potential students before they’re released, so we can part of a successful process of coming home and choosing a new, positive way forward. For new DC Central Kitchen employee and recent Culinary Job Training graduate Kenzie, in-reach was a life-changing opportunity. Learn more about Kenzie on our blog...

DC Central Kitchen’s Culinary Job Training program connects the next generation of culinarians to hospitality careers—and it’s hard to imagine a better place to learn and network than the global headquarters of Marriott International, a leading and long-time partner of our training program. Last week we continued a shared annual tradition of our job training students touring Marriott’s headquarters in Bethesda, MD, with an insider tour with leaders from both Marriott and DC Central Kitchen.
