What’s the scariest thing we could see this Halloween?

The thought of TCAVA passing has many veterans shivering in our boots. This monster of a bill isn’t going to get a jump scare out of anybody, we’ve seen it coming for a while. But like our worst nightmares, this bill that threatens to take away benefits for many vets and raise the cost of things like buying a home, is keeping vets up at night. Thankfully, you can do something to vanquish this beast, contact your congressperson today.

Dead, but not gone.

Some laws remain on the books long after they stop being actively enforced or their original purpose has faded. These are often referred to as Zombie Laws: legislation that may seem inactive but hasn't officially disappeared. Their continued existence raises important questions about how legislation evolves, changes, and sometimes gets left behind

Housing insecurity doesn’t always look like homelessness.

For many veterans, it means relying on family or friends for a place to stay, struggling to afford a home, or living without the stability every family deserves.

While veterans are more likely to own homes than non-veterans, they also face a greater risk of homelessness. IAVA CEO Dr. Kyleanne Hunter emphasizes, we must recognize the full spectrum of housing insecurity to better support veterans and their families.

Housing security means more than having a roof overhead. It means having a stable place to call home.

The Major Richard Star Act (MRSA) has reached the 218-signature threshold on its House discharge petition, bringing this long-overdue legislation one step closer to a floor vote. But reaching this milestone is only the beginning.

IAVA continues to call for a clean, standalone vote on the Major Richard Star Act and rejects efforts to tie its passage to harmful legislation like TCAVA.

Combat-injured veterans deserve the retirement pay and disability compensation they have earned. They should not have to wait any longer for the benefits they deserve.

Now is the time to keep the pressure on Capitol Hill. Contact your elected officials, demand a clean, standalone MRSA vote, and make sure Congress knows veterans are counting on them to act.

IAVA will continue advocating until the Major Richard Star Act passes and combat-injured veterans receive the benefits they have earned.

IAVA is heading to NatCon!

Student Veterans of America’s National Conference (NatCon) brings together student veterans, advocates, and leaders from across the country to connect, share experiences, and strengthen the future of the veteran community.

Our Director of Membership & Communications, Jerritt Lynn, will facilitate a breakout session titled “The Last Forever War: A Lifetime of Advocacy,” exploring the lasting impact of military service and the importance of continued advocacy for veterans.

Two bills. Two very different implications for the veterans who have served our country.

The Major Richard Star Act (MRSA) would help combat-injured veterans who medically retired before completing 20 years of service receive both their earned military retirement pay and VA disability compensation. No veteran should have to lose one benefit to receive another they have earned.

The Take Care of America’s Veterans Act (TCAVA) raises serious concerns for IAVA, including provisions that could affect future disability compensation for conditions like tinnitus and sleep apnea and increase VA home loan funding fees.

At IAVA, we believe veterans deserve policies that honor their service, protect their earned benefits, and put their needs first.

Our position is clear: pass the Major Richard Star Act as a clean, standalone bill. Protect veterans’ earned benefits.

Effective advocacy starts with understanding who holds influence, how decisions get made, and how relationships drive change.

Tomorrow, October 27, the IAVA Zach McIlwain Leadership Program (ZMLP) cohort will explore the strategy behind effective advocacy and leadership with IAVA Board Member Jeremy Butler, former IAVA CEO and Navy veteran.

From 2019 to 2023, Jeremy led IAVA as CEO, bringing extensive experience in nonprofit leadership, national security, and military affairs. With more than 20 years of experience advising leaders across government, the private sector, and the nonprofit world, he brings a wealth of strategic insight to the next generation of veteran advocates.

During the session, the cohort will dive into:
- takeholder identification
- Power analysis
- Influence networks
- Relationship management

Building a stronger veteran community takes more than knowing what needs to change. It takes knowing who to engage, how to build trust, and how to turn relationships into results.

Through ZMLP, IAVA equips post-9/11 veterans with the skills, knowledge, and strategic perspective to become effective leaders and advocates for their communities.
