WomenHeart is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 1999 by three heart attack survivors who transformed the isolation, confusion and ignorance they experienced about women’s heart disease into a mission to save women’s lives. The organization has grown into a coalition and community of more than 27,000 members nationwide, including heart patients and their families, physicians, health advo

cates, and consumers committed to helping women live longer, healthier lives. These survivors attend the organization’s Leadership Symposium, held at the Mayo Clinic, to obtain leadership and advocacy training. They go on to volunteer as WomenHeart support group leaders, community educators, and media spokeswomen around the U.S. WomenHeart empowers women living with heart disease to manage their own heart health and to spread that message to others. The organization also educates policymakers, health professionals and the public about the urgent need to make women’s heart health a priority.

One of the most important parts of heart health is knowing what to ask.

Questions like:
What does this mean for me long-term?
What are my options?
What should I be monitoring?

These conversations help women better understand their care and make informed decisions.

Some heart disease risk factors can’t be changed, while others may be managed with the right information, resources, and support.

Understanding factors such as blood pressure, cholesterol, smoking, physical activity, and diabetes can help women have informed conversations with their healthcare teams and identify steps that make sense for their health and circumstances.

Living with heart disease can be difficult, especially when you’re managing so many other responsibilities.

Connecting with women who understand can provide encouragement, connection, and practical support throughout your heart health journey.

WomenHeart’s support groups bring together women living with heart disease to share experiences and remind one another that no one has to navigate heart disease alone.

There are still significant gaps in how women’s heart health is studied, understood, and treated.

Closing those gaps requires bringing different perspectives into the same space and being willing to challenge existing assumptions.

That is the work the Heart Health IS Women’s Health Summit is designed to do.
