Ghana is the world’s second largest producer, but the country has seen declining production in recent years, partly because of a boom in artisanal and small-scale due to the rising global gold price.

The Shared Ground project – a collaboration among Pact, Solidaridad, and the Ghana Farmer’s Cocoa Association – is working to build peace and community cohesion between cocoa farmers and gold miners to strengthen the resilience and sustainability of both sectors.​ Funded by the Chocolonely Foundation, Shared Ground engages stakeholders in social dialogue workshops where communities come together to share their perspectives, develop mutual understanding, and identify action points for conflict resolution.

“At first we were having disagreements with the miners,” said Cecilia Kofori, a local cocoa farmer. "But due to this program, we have settled all those disputes.”

Since 2016, Pact has worked to improve the lives of artisanal miners in East Africa, mostly women working to support their families through this difficult occupation. We began in partnership with Gemological Institute of America, offering basic tools and training to help miners understand how to value and make more for their gemstones. 💎 ⛏️

A decade later, Moyo Gems has grown into a robust social and economic program that is truly transforming lives, empowering miners in Tanzania, Kenya, and beyond to earn much more for their gems, directly access international markets, and mine in ways that are safer, more efficient, and environmentally responsible.

It wouldn't be possible without our partners and donors, including ANZA Gems, Nineteen48, Maison Piat, A Beautiful Story, World Bank, Brilliant Earth, SCS Global, the Netherlands Enterprise Agency, and more.

Miners themselves have also played a crucial role, guiding and supporting Moyo Gems through the Association of Women in Energy in Kenya and the Tanzania Women Miners Association.

Pact’s approach to environment work is steeped in partnership — especially with local communities. We empower people to protect the while also pursuing stable livelihoods and prosperity. 🌍

We foster sustainable natural resource management and community-led decision-making, working within the realities of population pressure, poverty, and the impacts of a changing climate. We partner with local people, governments, and civil society so they can develop the necessary skills to manage and responsibly benefit from the natural resources around them, from fish to forests to mineral deposits. 🐟 🌴⛏️

In Indonesia, for example, the MESTI project empowered shrimp farmers to earn more while also adopting new practices to restore critical mangrove forests, which protect against rising environmental stresses.

Funded by Chevron and led by Pact, the effort also helped communities gain through solar, powering local businesses. ☀️

By taking on the economic and environmental challenges of shrimp farming, together with local communities, we built solutions to last. 💪

When the Colombian nonprofit organization Corprovid began, its founders knew what they wanted to do. Migrants were flooding into Colombia from Venezuela, and many of them – especially women and children – needed critical support.

But how would the organization make the most impact possible?

Corprovid found the answer with Pact, which provided the organization with critical capacity development support in 2021 and 2022. Corprovid took part in an intensive, strategic strengthening process through which Pact empowered the organization to effectively design, fund, and implement its own initiatives.

Capacity development is a cornerstone of Pact’s work around the world. Whether a health program that is bolstering the local HIV response or an environment program working to build climate-smart livelihoods, Pact works through local organizations, strengthening their ability to make long after Pact exits.

“It was like getting a master’s degree,” said Ana Isabel Muñoz Marquez, Corprovid’s Director. “We had mentors of the highest quality.”
