NGA's Fresh Start Program provides students in need with the opportunity to select their own clothing at local retailers rather than receiving donated items chosen for them. This unique approach empowers students to make their own decisions, helping them develop independence, confidence, and a sense of responsibility.

Participants learn valuable life skills such as budgeting, comparing prices, and making thoughtful purchasing decisions while staying within an assigned spending limit. Beyond providing essential clothing, the program focuses on restoring dignity and building self-esteem by allowing students to shop like their peers. This experience helps reduce the stigma often associated with receiving assistance and gives students the confidence to express their personal style. By meeting a basic need in a respectful and empowering way, the Fresh Start Program supports students' emotional well-being, encourages positive self-image, and helps them begin the school year feeling prepared, valued, and ready to succeed both inside and outside the classroom.
