Thinking of Dad on Father’s Day…
He worked almost 40 years, seven days a week. He wasn’t perfect. None of us are. But he showed up.
Even with how much he worked, we still sat down for dinner as a family at least four nights a week. That meant something.
In 1996, he bought a liquor license and opened a liquor store in Marlboro, NJ. He passed not too long after that, but my family kept it going for 20 years. We sold the store in 2016.
That money is what gave us the chance to start Recover Revolution.
In August of 2016, we opened as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with one real purpose. Help people struggling with substance use disorder get into recovery and stay there.
The money went fast. Starting recovery housing in New Jersey is no joke. Leases, security deposits, first and last month’s rent, beds, mattresses, utilities, insurance, drug tests, supplies. It adds up quick.
Back then it was around $20,000 just to get one house started. Today it is closer to $25,000.
But we kept going.
We didn’t grow because of some big plan or corporate backing. We grew because people needed help, landlords started reaching out, and the community kept showing us there was more work to do.
Today, Recover Revolution has 12 recovery houses, 9 for men and 3 for women, and our Help Request Division continues to connect people with support when they need it most.
So today, I’m grateful for my dad. For what he worked for. For what he left behind. And for the chance to turn part of his legacy into something that helps other people live.
