Since 1999, Friends of Belmar Harbor (FOBH) has proudly offered Monmouth County’s premier summer sailing programs for children of all experience levels. From first-time sailors learning the basics to advanced racers sharpening their competitive skills, FOBH provides top-level coaching, hands-on learning, and unforgettable experiences on the water.

Programs for Every Age & Skill Level
Introduction to Sailing (Ages 6–9)
It’s never too early to get on the water! Our half-day Introduction to Sailing program is perfect for younger children looking to experience boating and water fun in a safe, supportive environment. Campers are introduced to basic sailing concepts while building confidence and enjoying time outdoors with new friends.
Learn to Sail Level 1 (Ages 7–11)
Our Learn to Sail Level 1 program is designed specifically for beginner sailors and requires no prior sailing experience. This fun, group-based class introduces students to the fundamentals of sailing over one exciting week of instruction.
Campers will learn:
Water and dock safety
Parts of the boat
Basic knots and rigging
Steering and boat handling
What it feels like to sail on the water in Optimist trainers
With patient instructors and a nurturing environment, students develop confidence one step at a time while discovering a lifelong love of sailing.
Learn to Race – Optimist Sailing (Ages 8–13)
Ready to take sailing skills to the next level? Learn to Race – Optimist Sailing is designed for young sailors who have successfully completed Learn to Sail Level 1 and Level 2 or have equivalent experience.
This exciting program introduces sailors to the fundamentals of racing in a fun and supportive environment while building on core sailing techniques. Sailors will develop:
Racing rules and strategy
Boat speed and sail trim
Starting techniques
Course navigation
Confidence and teamwork on the water
Ideal for motivated sailors who are eager to continue their sailing journey and experience the thrill of competition.
Beginner 420 Sailing
This course is designed for older and larger sailors who are new to sailing, as well as younger sailors with some experience who are new to the Club 420 dinghy. Sailors will gain hands-on experience while learning:
Basics of rigging a 420
Fundamental boat handling
Seamanship skills including knots and weather awareness
Sportsmanship
Water safety
This program provides an excellent next step for sailors looking to transition into larger boats while continuing to build confidence and independence on the water.
Racing Clinics & Advanced Sailing
For more experienced sailors, FOBH also offers advanced learn-to-race clinics and summer racing programs designed to build skills, teamwork, and confidence on the water.
