🌊 💙 Volunteer Spotlight: Matt Hartman 💙 🌊

Today, we want to give a huge shout-out to Matt Hartman, our incredible Volunteer Coordinator and an invaluable leader within the Surfrider Jersey Shore Chapter. 🙌

Over the past several years, Matt has consistently stepped up and taken on a tremendous leadership role, helping our chapter grow and thrive. From coordinating individual volunteer opportunities to managing the many moving parts of our corporate volunteer programs, often during the workweek, Matt is always willing to lend his time, expertise, and energy to support our mission. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Beyond volunteer coordination, Matt is deeply involved in our events, advocacy efforts and legislative initiatives, helping ensure that our voice is heard in the fight to protect our coastlines and ocean ecosystems. 😁

Matt's dedication goes far beyond the hours he gives. His kindness, positivity and willingness to help others make him not only an exceptional volunteer leader but also an exceptional human being. 🫶🏽

Big News for New Jersey's Water Quality! 🌊

This World Oceans Day, we're proud to announce a new partnership between the Jersey Shore Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation and Monmouth University to expand year-round ocean water quality monitoring across New Jersey. 🫱🏽‍🫲🏼 🫶🏽

Through Surfrider's Blue Water Task Force (BWTF), volunteers will collect water samples from local beaches, while Monmouth University's PHAB Lab will analyze bacteria levels and publish results for the public. Together, we're helping fill critical gaps in water quality monitoring and providing more timely information to keep swimmers, surfers, and beachgoers informed.

🏄‍♀️ Why it matters:
✅ More frequent water testing at Jersey Shore beaches
✅ Year-round monitoring beyond the state's summer sampling season
✅ Better data for public health, environmental protection, and community action
✅ Hands-on research opportunities for Monmouth University students

Our coast is one of New Jersey's greatest treasures. Protecting it requires science, transparency and community involvement and this partnership brings all three together. 💙

🌊 Happy World Oceans Day from the Jersey Shore Chapter 💙

Did you know?
🌊 The ocean covers more than 70% of our planet
💧 Oceans contain about 97% of Earth’s water
🌬️ The ocean produces at least 50% of the oxygen we breathe

Our oceans regulate climate, support incredible biodiversity, provide food for billions of people and connect communities around the world. But pollution, plastic waste, rising temperatures and habitat destruction continue to threaten the waters we all depend on.

This World Oceans Day, let’s remember that protecting our ocean means protecting our future. Every beach cleanup, reusable bottle, reduced plastic use and advocacy effort makes a difference.

Together, we can protect the ocean, waves and beaches we love for generations to come. 🌊 ♻️ 💙
