Matthew Lang is an ocean, surf, wildlife, live music photographer based in Monmouth and Ocean County, New Jersey.

Featured in THE WHITECHAPEL PROJECTS Surf & Sea community showcase supported by Jetty and Some Coastal Town, Lang is on the pulse of the local NJ music scene, covering live performances at The Stone Pony and national acts with global followings like Phish and Tedeschi Trucks Band . As a respected surf photographer with an impressive catalogue of
images, Matt’s work possesses a common theme that illustrates, with depth and precision, our human connection with the ocean.

A Celebration of Surf + Sea + NJ Photography

The ocean and surfing give us so much - connection, culture, community, joy and healing. Just as the ocean’s waves serve as a powerful source of inspiration for those who enter the water - we recognize the important role photographers play as visual storytellers, granting people beyond our coastal community access to the majesty of the ocean and the embodied feeling of surfing.

Through every season and condition, photographers immerse themselves in the elements - witnessing, capturing, and artfully conveying the spirit of surfing through their lens. On behalf of everyone The Ocean Is Female (The OisF), we are truly indebted to the work of our local photographers for the unique way that they connect people to the healing essence of the sea through their art.

In celebration of six years of The OisF and the community that has grown around it, we are highlighting the sacred artistry of our talented local surf photographers. We invite our community to join us for a gallery and silent auction at our 6th Annual “Waves of Change” Fundraiser at The Parker House on June 25, 2026.

100% of proceeds will support The OisF’s programs - bringing healing, connection, and joy to girls and survivors of abuse through the transformative power of surfing and the ocean.

Living in the Moment

As consistent as the surf camera itself, Michael Taylor keeps his lens intently focused on the ocean. Whether it’s flat or firing, if you surf- Taylor most likely has a clip.

Michael Taylor is a visual artist from NJ, who artistically captures waves, wildlife and all the coastal wonders in between. Photographers like Michael Taylor are more than gifts, they are record keepers of culture and the storytellers of our local surf community. Michael’s talent and commitment to his craft is matched by his generosity and his willingness to share his art so freely with the world.

This original piece, titled, “Living in the Moment,” is one of two special works that are both vibrant tangible, receipts of the ocean’s giving spirit and Michael’s.

This Must Be The Place

While he once considered himself to be just an avid traveler who simply “liked to take pictures on vacation,” a trip to Hawaii and a DSLR camera served as powerful catalyst for a 10 + year passion project in the visual arts. Scott Miller is a New Jersey- based photographer who specializes in wildlife and surf photography. Miller’s precise attention to detail, unwavering patience and his connection to the flow of nature, are all attributes that make him a trusted surf filmer- a regular on the Eastern Surfing Association scene, and respected wildlife photographer whose impeccable stills are standouts in his impressive portfolio.
