Through the language of lived experience, neuroscience, physiology and peer-reviewed research- The OisF Foundation has embarked on a journey to answer one simple question:

How does the ocean heal us?

For survivors of abuse and for anyone whose nervous system is carrying something the world hasn’t yet found a remedy for…

The Ocean Is Female proudly presents, “The Ocean Is Medicine,” a comprehensive, living, breathing document that explores the science behind ocean-based healing.

We welcome our community to join us and explore the science and the story, the research and reverberations of a collective consciousness that begins to answer the question, how does the ocean heal us and why does surf therapy work.

The Big Wash

If you attended our Waves of Change fundraiser, you know that this incredible event was centered around generous contributions from our treasured NJ surf photographers. This special initiative serendipitously connected us with big wave pioneer, filmmaker and giant in the surf therapy space-Grant Washburn.

Grant is a lifelong waterman whose love for surfing was born during the summers of his childhood spent in Lavalette, NJ. In the 90’s, Grant was among the first to charge Half Moon Bay’s infamous “Mavericks,” a wave that quite literally carved out the trajectory of his life’s work.

Grant is known as the “professor” within California’s heaviest lineups. With over 1,000 sessions at Mavericks meticulously logged in a journal that documents swell analytics, Grant is also a trusted partner of Sofar Ocean, a marine technology firm that deploys wave spotting buoys to provide the most scientific wave forecasting at Mavericks and beyond. Grant became a household name for his work as stuntman and surf coordinator for feature films like “Chasing Mavericks,” and more recently as marine coordinator for “Whalefall,” a 20th Century Film set for release this year. Using his documentary filmmaking skills to champion female big wave surfing, Grant intentionally dedicates his creative efforts towards focusing his lens on women like Sarah Gernhardt, the first female to surf Mavericks. Among numerous Hollywood credits and astounding professional accolades, Grant is surfer, a family man and a humble human who is deeply committed to sharing his wisdom and his heart with a variety of surf therapy programs, which now includes The Ocean Is Female (The OisF).

When Grant’s contributions did not make it in time for the fundraiser, he did something that true heroes do…

he showed up.

So here we are, The OisF Gliders - Women’s Surf Collective, trading waves with legendary big wave rider, Grant Washburn and his fascinating daughter Emily, another rising leader in the surf therapy world. We surfed, we shared, we smiled and in a couple hours- Grant and his family made an impression on our hearts that will stay with us forever.
