Rosa Louise McCauley Parks was an American activist in the civil rights movement best known for her pivotal role in the Montgomery bus boycott. The United States Congress has called her "the first lady of civil rights" and "the mother of the freedom movement". Rosa Parks invigorated the struggle for racial equality when she refused to give up her bus seat to a white man in Montgomery. We honor her along with many other Women this month to celebrate Women’s History Month.

As we dive into March, we now honor Women as it is officially Women’s History Month. Today, we admire Harriet Beecher Stowe. While living in Cincinnati, Stowe encountered fugitive slaves and the Underground Railroad. Later, she wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin in reaction to recently tightened fugitive slave laws. Harriet shared ideas about the injustices of slavery, pushing back against dominant cultural beliefs about the physical and emotional capacities of black people. Stowe became a leading voice in the anti-slavery movement. Uncle Toms Cabin had a major influence on the way the American public viewed slavery.

W.E.B. Du Bois was an American sociologist, historian, civil rights activist, Pan-Africanist, author, and writer. Du Bois encouraged us to honor the many ways African descendants shape global history. On February 19th, 1919 the first Pan-African Congress met. DuBois was at the center of its proceedings and the conference was a first step toward not only uniting the black global diaspora, but also establishing a black internationalism that would come into its own in the years after World War II. We commemorate Du Bois for his leadership in the Pan-African Congress and his efforts as a determined civil rights activist.

Happy Birthday Toni Morrison! Toni Morrison, originally named Chloe Anthony Wofford was the first African American woman to do many important things. She became an editor at Random House and won the Nobel Prize for Literature among them, her work has often been viewed solely through the lens of identity. She is praised for her writing efforts. Toni’s critically acclaimed Beloved (1987), won a Pulitzer Prize for fiction. The piece is based on the true story of a runaway slave and encompasses the many hardships they faced. We thank Toni Morrison for reshaping the landscape of literature.

Today we wish a very Happy Birthday to the great Micheal Jeffrey Jordan. Jordan is a famed basketball player and formal minor league baseball player born in New York, N.Y. Micheal is a historic figure in the basketball community and has played 15 seasons in the NBA, winning six championships with the Chicago Bulls. Michael is the owner of The Jordan Brand, owns the Charlotte Hornets basketball team, and devotes some of his time and resources toward charitable groups. He's also a grandpa now, and makes sure to spend time with his family.

Singer Bessie Smith's recording career lasted only 10 years, but during that time she created a body of work that helped shape the sound of the 20th century. Smith helped pioneer the genre of blues music and propel it into popular culture. On February 16th, 1923 she made her first recording, “Down Hearted Blues” which sold 800,000 copies for Columbia Records. Bessie Smith became one of the earliest stars of recorded music and a leading figure of what came to be called classic blues; a genre dominated by African American women.

On this day we commemorate Henry Lewis. At an early age, Lewis had a deep passion and love for music and symphony orchestra. At the age of 16, he joined the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Later in his music career Lewis became the conductor and musical director of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra — a nationally recognized orchestra. This made him the first African American to lead a major symphony orchestra on February 15th 1968. He broke racial barriers of U.S. Orchestras.

Happy Birthday to the great Fredrick Douglass. Frederick was an escaped slave who became a prominent activist, author and public speaker. He became a leader in the abolitionist movement, which sought to end the practice of slavery, before and during the Civil War. He was the publisher of The North Star, an antislavery newspaper. The North Star soon developed into one of the most influential African American antislavery publications of the pre-Civil War era.

We congratulate Francicso Rodriguez on becoming the new Long Branch Public Schools Superintendent. Rodriguez was born and raised in Long Branch and is the first alumnus to be named superintendent of the school district. We say farewell to Michael Salvatore, who ran the district for the last decade. Salvatore is starting a new chapter in his life at Kean University, where he will be the senior vice president for administration. Congratulations to both. County

Thomas Alva Edison exerted a tremendous influence on modern life, contributing inventions such as the incandescent light bulb, the phonograph, and the motion picture camera, as well as improving the telegraph and telephone. He got his start by inventing the stock ticker and then selling it to an invention company. From there, his career took off. Thomas Edison is considered one of history's greatest inventors.

Nelson Mandela embodied the highest-values of the United Nations-peace, compassion, and forgiveness. He was an advocate for change and believed in equality for all people. He was so driven by his values to overthrow the Apartheid in South Africa that he was arrested and after 27 years was released. Mandela represents justice and peace for all.
