RETRACTED ORIGINAL POST :
I’m Joe Rizzo, the President of the Preservation Alliance of Spring Lake, and I’m sending this
post in response to a recent Facebook post about the demolition of the old home on the NE
corner of Sussex and First Avenue, which I didn’t write, but had my name and email address
listed at the end.
While I understand that the member that did write it was upset with yet another demolition of
one of our old Pre-War homes, and its negative impact on the historic character and identity of
Spring Lake, I totally disagree with the disparaging remarks made about the current owners.
Unfortunately that member was not aware that the new owners were not a developer or
builder, but a family who were supporters of Preservation and the Alliance, and had recently
done the wonderful restoration of the historic property at First and Washington Avenues.
They were upset buy the post and called me to explain that while they planned to restore their
new property, the subsurface investigations done by their design team revealed that the wood
structure under the brick veneer that had been later added to it was severely rotted, with mold
and major water damage, and not really salvageable.

Member apology to the owners :

As the PASL member who wrote the post ( with the assistance of AI) it was Not intended to be directed to the owner who was anonymous at the time but when it was revealed i felt terrible because they are cherished local residents ..NOT DEVELOPERS ( to whom it was directed towards ) . The owner is conscience of preservation and is a recent PASL award winner.. im sure if this house ( which was altered from the original ) could be renovated, they would have done it.. But the comment was a blanket statement to raise awareness of the century old homes that are torn down without the thought of renovation..
I hope this does not reflect negativelyon our president… BUT we could use the support of other SL residents to save the Victorian Era homes in decent condition.

Ashling Cottage RECOGNIZED FOR PRESERVATION

Monday evening, June 2, Peter and Linda Foy were awarded a Certificate of Recognition from the Monmouth County Historical Commission in Freehold, NJ. In her letter to Preservation Alliance of Spring Lake President, Joe Rizzo, Executive Director Meg Sharp Walton wrote that “The Foys should be commended for their dedication to preserving one of Spring Lake’s architectural gems,” namely Ashling Cottage.

This charming Empire Victorian style building is located at 106 Sussex Avenue. Built in 1877, the house was called “Hulett Cottage,” and later was known as ”The Wedgewood Boarding House.” It was finally named “The Ashling Cottage Bed and Breakfast” by owners Joan and Bill Mahon. The Foys have owned and operated it as a bed and breakfast from 2008 until 2014. Since then, they have achieved their goal of converting it into their private residence, further improving it while maintaining as much as possible of its original historic identity and charming appearance.

In assisting the Foys with this nomination, Alliance President Rizzo highlighted the importance of their home to Monmouth County’s history. It is an early and excellent example of the vacation cottages, inns, bed-and-breakfasts, and hotels that helped transform the County’s small farming and fishing communities into thriving vacation destinations and resorts.
