Happy Feast Day of St. Gregory the Great! 🕊️
He had wealth, rank, and the highest civil office in Rome.
He gave all of it away.
St. Gregory was the son of a Roman senator and Prefect of the city. He sold his family estates, fed a starving Rome, and became the first pope to call himself Servus servorum Dei — Servant of the Servants of God.
“The only true riches are those that make us rich in virtue. Therefore, if you want to be rich, beloved, love true riches. If you aspire to the heights of real honor, strive to reach the kingdom of Heaven.”
— St. Gregory the Great, Homily 15 on the Gospels
