Pasquotank County High School now has a telehealth clinic directly on campus, connecting students and staff with licensed medical providers through virtual visits.

Dave and Sarah Hummel were spending a quiet evening together at home. But just moments after falling asleep, Sarah realized something was terribly wrong. Dave was unresponsive and struggling to breathe.

As Sarah called 911, their sons jumped into action and began performing CPR. Then, in a moment Sarah says she'll never forget, she ran barefoot across the street late at night to get help from a neighbor who happened to be a surgeon. Together, their quick thinking helped save Dave's life after sudden cardiac arrest.

Dave was transported to Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital before being transferred to Sentara Heart Hospital at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where doctors discovered he had experienced ventricular fibrillation, a dangerous electrical abnormality in the heart.

Today, Dave is not only recovering, but sharing his story in hopes that others will pay attention to their health before it's too late.❤️

Nothing could stop Chris Odachowski from celebrating his daughter’s graduation, not even his recent health journey.

Chris spent several weeks in four Sentara hospitals dealing with complications from a collapsed lung. All while his daughter was preparing to graduate from Christopher Newport University.

After missing the chance to be at the ceremony in person, Chris’s family brought the celebration to him, with a little help from the Sentara CarePlex Hospital team. His daughter Emily arrived in her cap and gown, the hospital garden became the venue, and Chris got to experience this beautiful milestone surrounded by his family and care team.

What made this moment even more meaningful? Chris's wife, Tracey, is also part of our Sentara team – making this truly a family affair.

A beautiful example of how patient care can extend beyond clinical interactions. ❤️‍🩹

100,000 virtual nursing visits later, one thing is clear: virtual nursing helps improve the experience of nurses and patients alike. 💻🩺

Virtual nursing is implemented across all 12 Sentara hospitals, providing 24/7 support to 73 units spanning 1,720 beds. Working alongside bedside nurses, virtual nurses assist with admissions, discharges, patient education, and other administrative tasks that don’t require hands-on care.

By helping manage those responsibilities, virtual nurses allow bedside teams to spend more time focused on direct patient care and meaningful moments with patients.

It’s a new way to care, powered by teamwork. 🤝

This is what being an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) at Sentara looks like. You get more than a job – you get training, mentorship, peer support, and a community that wants you to succeed.

Recently, we hosted two training events for our APPs – the Tidewater Outpatient APP Procedural Workshop and the Critical Care APP Simulation Skills Day. These events remind us why Sentara has become a destination for APPs who want to grow their careers.
