The turtles among us, like this diamondback terrapin in the Bay Lab Aquarium at First Landing State Park, don't bark, growl or squawk. They don't raid the birdfeeder, peck at the house, eat copious amounts of fresh baby veggie leaves or chew holes in plants. Their worst sin may be to snag a cocktail tomato off a very low branch.

All turtles ask of us is protection--protection of their habitat, protection from autos, protection from getting trapped in crap pots and more. That's not much to ask for being such good neighbors that offer only nice surprises when you see them.

More photos of our incredible volunteers recently completing the sand fill-in phase of making a living shoreline. Now that the hard part is done, we wait for the tide to help settle the sand in place and then it's onto the fun part of planting saltmarsh cordgrass!

Today, on World Turtle Day, give a nod to these silent, mostly unseen critters that live among us every day.

Brent James, LRNow's Oyster Restoration Manager, hit the turtle jackpot this week. He discovered this tiny diamondback terrapin born in a nest out near the road at the Brock Environmental Center and took it down to the grasses along the Lynnhaven. He also came across these contented sliders sunning on a log in a neighborhood lake.

Diamondback terrapins, sliders, sea turtles, snapping turtles, box, spotted and mud turtles and many more species are all around us, yet need nothing from us except our protection.
