In Hampton Roads, military service is part of who we are. From Naval Station Norfolk to Joint Base Langley-Eustis, from the Chesapeake Bay to our Atlantic shoreline, the legacy of those who served is woven throughout our communities.

As we remember the sacrifice of those who gave all for our country, we are reminded that protecting our nation also means protecting the places we call home. The waterways, wetlands, forests, beaches, and communities of Coastal Virginia face growing challenges from pollution, habitat loss, and rising seas. It is our shared responsibility to care for the nation they served, including the natural places that enrich our communities and connect future generations to the outdoors.

We pause today in remembrance and gratitude.

A Public Talk on Commercial Shipping, Pollution, and Community Impacts
By Dr. Robert F. Hodson, Executive Director, Protect Virginia Inc.
Cruise ships and commercial vessels bring visitors and revenue to Virginia—but they also generate significant air and water pollution that affects public health, local waterways, and coastal communities.
This talk examines the hidden environmental and health costs of ship pollution, challenges industry claims about economic benefits, and explores practical policy solutions to protect Virginia’s waters, its seafood economy, and residents.

Join us for an informative presentation on ship emissions, waste discharge, fuel choices, and the growing movement for cleaner, more accountable maritime practices in Virginia.

On Tuesday evening, the Coastal Virginia Group is sponsoring Developing Coastal Resilience in Tidewater. We are fortunate to have two experts speak on this topic. Rear Admiral Ann Phillips, USN (Ret), served as Special Assistant for Coastal Adaptation and Protection under Governor Ralph Northam, and more recently as Maritime Administrator, US Department of Transportation. After 20 years with NOAA, Andrew Larkin, JD, now serves as Assistant Director of Engagement for the ODU Institute for Coastal Adaptation and Resilience (ICAR). Our speakers will review past and present efforts to stem the tide of sea level rise, as well as addressing plans for the future. All this is happening at a time when various federal environmental safeguards are being diluted, if not outright eliminated. Fortunately, state and local organizations, both private and public, have been stepping in. Such local action offers greater opportunity for community involvement, which is invaluable for the success of this endeavor. Come and learn how you can do your part to support our coastal environment.

Come hang and check out Scrapz with us at Virginia Wesleyan’s Greer Environmental Center. We’re going to be learning about composting and getting set for spring events! Registration info is in the bio.

work centers on building practical local loops through compost education, connecting residents and businesses, and reclaiming materials into usable systems. They are intentional about making tools that reduce waste or strengthen community systems rather than creating novelty items.

TODAY -- to support 100 MW solar project in Nottoway County, VA please click this link and comment on the project https://www.scc.virginia.gov/case-information/submit-public-comments/cases/pur-2025-00150.html

Monarch Solar delivers long-lasting economic benefits to Brunswick
County
➢ Monarch Solar will pay millions of dollars in tax revenue to local
communities over its 25-35 year lifetime. This means that both Brunswick

and Greensville County will receive sustained income that helps fund local
schools, roads, and community services.
➢ Utility-scale projects like Monarch Solar help keep energy bills stable and
affordable. Solar is now one of the most reliable and cost-effective forms of
energy we can build. It’s also sold under long-term fixed price contracts,
insulating consumers from fuel price swings and providing predictable energy
costs for decades.
➢ Monarch Solar will create hundreds of good-paying construction
jobs—creating skilled opportunities for local working families and providing
an economic boost to area businesses and service providers.
