It's happening!!!

Behold, the first Beaver Dam Analog being built in Judd Creek! This is a super exciting step for watershed restoration and a moment the Land Trust community has been anticipating for over a year.

Want to check out this progress yourself and lend a hand? Join our Stew Crew Work Party tomorrow morning (9/1) at 10:00 am. We'll meet at the Judd Creek parking lot and hike in together.

Summer may be winding down (how is it already mid-August?), but there are still some bright spots to be found. Like our summer migratory songbirds, or a Thursday volunteer day with the Vashon Bird Alliance!

VBA volunteers partner with the Land Trust every week to help maintain and restore habitat in Paradise Valley. They remove invasive plants, prepare new areas for planting, and plant native trees and shrubs that capture and store carbon and provide food and shelter for the whole array of local wildlife. And they have a great time doing it together! Come join the fun!

Details:

Thursday, August 20th
10:00 am – 12:00 pm

Meeting place: Judd Creek Loop Trail trailhead, on the east side of 111th Ave. S.W. in Paradise Valley. Parking is along the road. Note: This is not the Kneeshaw Trailhead parking lot, which is further north and on the west side of 111th. If you arrive late, follow the signs to the worksite.

Tools needed: Bring your own shovels and loppers, if possible. A few extra tools will be on hand, but bringing your own helps assure we have enough for everybody!

Attire: Please bring your own work gloves. Wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather. Long pants and long-sleeved shirts are strongly recommended.

Embrace the bramble! This week the Stew Crew is heading out to one of our Beaver Dam Analog sites to tackle some invasives to help prep for installation. (Plus, we’ll be clearing the area for planting in the fall!)

We’ll be pulling blackberries, hawthorn, and ivy in the wetland, so this is a great week to come out if you have not sufficiently scratched your desire to do battle with invasives this summer.

Details:

Tuesday, August 11th
10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Shinglemill BDA site, 11130 SW Cove Rd

Please park along Cove Rd next to the airport. We'll start at the trailhead after an orientation to the sites and location. Look for the Land Trust trucks!

Be sure to dress for the weather and bring hydration. We'll have gloves, tools, and everything else you need 🍪

Have you been wondering what all of that lumber was doing along the Shinglemill Creek trail? This week, portions of the trail were closed for a very good cause: the Stew Crew was hard at work building boardwalks. This portion of the trail, as you head up the ravine, has always been a bit challenging and wet, and has eroded quite substantially over the years with normal trail use. These boardwalks will allow folks to continue to enjoy this special trail safely, while protecting the tree roots and allowing the water from the hillside seeps to continue their journey to Shinglemill Creek.

Thanks to Abel, Keller, Adrian, and our interns for keeping our trails beautiful, safe, and accessible!
