A crack. An uneven edge. A surface changed by time. "Wabi-sabi " asks us to look again at things we might ordinarily consider imperfect and see the beauty in their history, individuality, and impermanence.
September 13: 2pm - Art historian Rebecca Albiani takes us into this centuries-old Japanese aesthetic and the way it has shaped ceramics, gardens, poetry, ikebana, and the art of everyday life.

A 17th-century Shigaraki tea jar repaired with gold lacquer (kintsugi) from The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The repair becomes part of the object's visual history rather than something to hide.

Tickets at the door.
Youth under 18 free.

Well, this made our week. R.E.M.'s own Peter Buck just gave VCA a shoutout, calling Sunday's Drink the Sea show 'a thoroughly smashing affair.' Thank you to the band and to everyone who came out and made it one for the books. This is exactly why we love bringing incredible live music to our island stage.

“The first Drink The Sea show was a thoroughly smashing affair on Vashon Island, followed by a chill ferry trip to Seattle. Our next show is in Grass Valley on Thursday the third. See y'all there!” - Peter

Albiani On… Wabi Sabi
Sunday, Sept. 13 · 2pm

Why do Japanese gardens feel so different from European formal gardens?

Join art historian Rebecca Albiani for an exploration of wabi-sabi—the Japanese aesthetic of finding beauty in simplicity, imperfection, nature, and the passage of time.

From moss-covered stones and aging wood to ceramics, ikebana, and the tea ceremony, discover how this centuries-old philosophy invites us to see beauty differently.

Presented in celebration of Mukai Farm & Garden’s 100th anniversary.
