👮‍♂️POPP Students Gain Real-World Insight from Criminal Justice Professionals

⚖️Senior and junior cadets from Los Angeles Valley College's Police Orientation and Preparedness Program (POPP) recently had the opportunity to learn from two experienced professionals in the criminal justice field: Norman Wegener, LAVC alumnus and recently retired attorney from the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office, and Michael Schensul, Los Angeles Alternate Public Defender.

Through their presentations and discussions, students gained valuable insight into what to expect when working within the criminal justice system as future law enforcement professionals.

💬Topics included:
• Collaboration between attorneys and law enforcement during case preparation
• Expectations and best practices when testifying in court
• Ethics and navigating complex cases
• The evolving role of technology, including body-worn cameras

This hands-on learning experience provided students with a deeper understanding of the legal system and helped prepare them for future careers in public service and criminal justice.

👩‍⚕️ Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Preetha Puthiakunnel

From India to Los Angeles Valley College, Dr. Puthiakunnel’s journey is rooted in compassion, dedication, and a deep commitment to student success.

Starting her career as a registered nurse, she built years of bedside experience before earning her master’s in nursing and doctorate in education. Today, she brings that real-world knowledge into the classroom by teaching not only clinical skills, but also empathy, critical thinking, and the courage to advocate for others.

💬 “Nursing isn’t just about medical knowledge. It’s about empathy, critical thinking, and the courage to advocate for others.”

Under her leadership, LAVC’s Nursing Program has become one of the most respected in the region, focused on hands-on learning, simulation labs, and strong mentorship that prepare students for real-world healthcare environments.

🌱 Her mission is clear: to develop confident, ethical professionals who make a difference from day one.

Dr. Puthiakunnel reminds her students that compassion is their greatest strength, because while skills can be taught, true care comes from the heart.

Today, many LAVC nursing graduates serve in hospitals, clinics, and public health centers across our community, carrying forward her vision.

💬 “Every student has a dream… my job is to make sure they believe they can.”
