💃✨ Throwback Thursday: We Get to Dance Here?!

Today we’re looking back at a special moment for LAVC Dance, students experiencing the beautiful new performance and rehearsal spaces at the Valley Academic and Cultural Center (VACC).

Professor of Dance Liz Casebolt captured the excitement perfectly: "One of the best parts of this semester was watching students see the VACC theatre for the first time. Their excitement was palpable… you could almost hear them thinking, "we get to dance here?!""

These state-of-the-art spaces give LAVC students opportunities to rehearse, perform, create, and grow as artists while preparing for their academic and professional journeys.

We love looking back at moments like these, and celebrating the creativity and talent of our LAVC students.

🎓💚 Closing National Student Parent Month with an Inspiring LAVC Story

Behind every degree is a story. Behind some degrees are years of courage, sacrifice, perseverance, and a child watching it all.

Meet Knarik Vardanyan, an LAVC Nursing student, immigrant, mother, and student parent whose journey at Valley began in 2019.

While balancing motherhood, work, financial responsibilities, and the demands of nursing school, Knarik has continued moving forward, one step at a time. Along the way, she earned four associate degrees and two certificates, received recognition on the Dean’s Honor List and President’s Honor List, and served as a student worker with LAVC CalWORKs, helping other students navigate some of the same challenges she experienced herself.

But perhaps her greatest motivation is the person watching her journey most closely: her son. 💚

“My son is my biggest motivation and reminds me every day why I cannot give up.”

Today, he watches his mom study, attend classes, prepare for exams, and pursue her dream of becoming a Registered Nurse. And sometimes, he tells her: “Mom, I want to be like you. I want to study like you.” 🥹

As National Student Parent Month comes to a close, we celebrate Knarik and all of our LAVC student parents who remind us that education can transform not only one life, but generations to come.

⚾ More Than a Game. A Lasting Impact.

For more than two decades, LAVC Athletic Director Dave Mallas has dedicated himself to mentoring, educating, and preparing generations of student-athletes for success, both on and off the field.

For Director Mallas, athletics is about much more than wins and losses. It is about building character, developing discipline, learning teamwork, and creating experiences that students can carry with them throughout their lives.

“Valley College is my home… it’s my second family,” Mallas shares.

At the LAVC Foundation, we believe these transformative experiences are an important part of student success. Donor support helps strengthen programs and opportunities that allow our students to learn, grow, compete, and build a lifelong sense of pride in being a Monarch.

📚✨ For Holly Batty, teaching is not only about delivering information. It is about creating a space where students feel safe, welcomed and connected. 💚 Growing up, she always loved English. Reading, discussing literature, and connecting with others through ideas felt natural to her.

After enrolling at Valley, Holly started working as a tutor at the Writing Center, where she discovered how powerful it felt to help someone understand something for the first time. 🌱 Her journey continued from tutor to coordinator, then English professor, and finally to Chair of the English Department. She describes this journey with one simple word: “Roots.” 🌳 For her, Valley is a place where she planted herself and grew over many years.

One of the most meaningful parts of her work was coordinating LAVC's Puente Program. 🤝 Through this experience, she learned more about many students’ struggles, which changed her perspective and teaching style. Instead of focusing only on rules, she focused on people. She saw that connection and support are not extra things in education, but they are essential.

🌟Holly believes strongly in the power of community colleges, describing them as "warm, caring spaces where students are not just numbers". 🏫💛 Faculty and staff work hard to understand students’ backgrounds, challenges, and needs to create a sense of family and belonging, especially for first-generation students.

🌱🎓 Today, she emphasizes critical thinking, research, and the ability to form strong arguments. 💡📖 In a world with AI and easy access to information, she believes students must learn how to question, analyze, and think independently. Whether in the classroom, through programs, or in one-on-one support, Professor Batty continues to create spaces where students can grow academically and personally.
