Grandparents As Parents

Grandparents As Parents Providing programs and services to meet the urgent and ongoing needs of grandparents and other relative caregivers raising children at-risk. Ms.

GAP was founded in 1987 by Sylvie de Toledo, a dedicated clinical social worker, whose own family was impacted by the death of her sister. Her sister left an 8 year old grandchild who immediately went to live with his grandparents. de Toledo recognized the need for support services targeting grandparents and other relatives who began to parent relative children because the parents were unable to d

o so. The primary reason was due to parental drug and alcohol use, however other reasons included abuse, neglect, incarceration, death mental illness and more. The impact of parenting again, required a total change in lifestyle. Most families needed help in recognizing what should be done and how to do it. Group therapy meetings where relatives could discuss their issues and concerns in a non-judgmental and caring environment with others in the same situation as themselves (often for the first time) became the backbone of Grandparents As Parents programs today. These groups, however, are only a small part of GAP's programs today.

Recently, the ONEgeneration's Grandparents As Parents Program held their 4th Annual Grandfamilies Camping trip. This year it was held at Ventura Beach RV Resort and over 50 GAP family members were happy to beat the heat. Families enjoyed lots of activities for the kids; swimming, a bounce house, an outdoor movie, train rides and even a bike parade at night! The families also enjoyed getting to spend time with other families in the program who attend different support groups and live in different areas. The event is a cornerstone program for GAP in decreasing feelings of isolation and exclusion in both our and children.

Last Sunday, the Grandparents As Parents program at ONEgeneration celebrated our caregivers by hosting an appreciation event focused on mental health awareness in partnership with Take Action for Mental Health. Caregivers were treated to experiences and classes that taught them ways to deal with stress and practice better self-care by taking care of both their minds and bodies. Activities included a sound bath, massages, drum circles and classes about essential oils. Caregivers were treated to an amazing lunch and given a beautiful gift bag of self-care products and mental health resource information. A major surprise for our caregivers was that each attending family got to take home a Theragun Pro generously provided by the Good+Foundation

While the caregivers took this time to care for and celebrate themselves older kids were treated to a ropes course experience day at Cal State Northridge and younger kids attended our day care where they got their faces painted, participated in their own drum circle and went home with very fun gift boxes. The GAP families had a wonderful day and ONEgeneration would like to say thank you to all the vendors who provided their services and products and took such good care of our caregivers. GAP staff would like to say a very special thank you to the Good+Foundation for their generous support which put such great smiles on our caregivers faces.

Our Story

GAP was founded in 1987.

Our dedicated team at GAP are passionate advocates who believe every time we positively impact one child or one caregiver, we are one step closer to changing our community. When caregivers are overwhelmed, when they find doors slamming in their faces, we step in and advocate on their behalf. We provide connection and support, breaking the isolation kinship families face when parents can no longer parent. Success is not guaranteed, but we persevere as we strive to keep moving the dream forward.

Our Approach

  • Innovative programming aimed at fostering the critical factors a young person needs to thrive, achieve and develop into caring, competent adults.
