Sometimes a simple tool makes the difference between dependence and independence.

Farmers markets and community festivals offer practice with decision-making, money handling, and navigation. Even managing summer heat - staying hydrated, dressing appropriately, recognizing when to seek shade - builds practical awareness. We help individuals take advantage of summer's expanded opportunities while developing skills that transfer to every season.

Employment skills preparation begins long before someone applies for a job. Understanding work expectations, following schedules, completing tasks independently, accepting feedback, and working cooperatively with others are foundational employment skills. For individuals interested in working, we can help develop these pre-vocational skills within daily routines and community activities. While not everyone's independence goals include employment, those who are interested deserve support in building the skills that make employment sustainable and successful.

Advocacy extends beyond self-advocacy to community advocacy. Some individuals develop skills to speak at community meetings, participate in disability rights organizations, educate others about inclusion, or share their experiences to improve services for everyone. When people with disabilities use their voices to create change, they don't just help themselves - they pave the way for others. Not everyone will become a public advocate, but everyone deserves to understand that their experiences and perspectives matter and can contribute to broader community understanding.

Weather awareness and seasonal preparation are practical life skills. Understanding weather forecasts helps with clothing choices and activity planning. Knowing how to prepare for Oklahoma's severe weather keeps people safe. Recognizing when conditions are dangerous for outdoor activities prevents injuries. Adjusting home routines for seasonal changes - like running fans in summer or adjusting thermostats in winter - develops awareness of both comfort and utility costs. These skills help individuals make informed decisions about their safety and daily activities.

We work with individuals to develop the awareness and communication skills that protect them while allowing authentic connection.

We teach individuals to recognize phishing attempts, protect passwords, understand privacy settings, verify information before sharing, and know when something online doesn't feel right. As people with disabilities increasingly use technology for banking, shopping, socializing, and accessing services, understanding digital safety protects them from scams, identity theft, and exploitation. These skills ensure that technology remains a tool for independence rather than a source of vulnerability.
