Worried your employer will treat you differently after requesting accommodations? That's illegal. The ADA protects you from retaliation. Employers cannot fire you, demote you, reduce your hours, or treat you negatively because you asked for reasonable accommodations. If you experience retaliation, document everything and contact the EEOC. Your rights matter.

Meet Marty, who successfully transitioned from construction work to project management after becoming an amputee. His story powerfully demonstrates that disability doesn't end your career - it often redirects it in meaningful ways. Marty's experience shows how transferable skills from one industry apply to another with the right support and accommodations. His transition from physical labor to management work required both practical adjustments and mental reframing of his professional identity. Marty's success reflects what becomes possible when you focus on your capabilities rather than limitations, work with employers who value your experience, and access appropriate support during career transitions.

The Ticket to Work program is completely free for anyone receiving SSDI or SSI between ages 18 and 64. You don't pay Employment Resources Inc. or any Employment Network for services. Social Security funds the program by paying Employment Networks based on your employment outcomes and progress. This means we succeed when you succeed - our payment comes from helping you achieve your employment goals, not from charging you fees. Free services include benefits counseling, employment planning, job search assistance, resume development, interview coaching, and ongoing support throughout your employment journey. Understanding that these comprehensive services cost you nothing removes a significant barrier to getting the support you need.

Understanding work incentives transforms the fear of losing benefits into confidence about pursuing employment. Social Security designed multiple protections specifically to support your transition to work. These incentives include the Trial Work Period for testing employment, Impairment-Related Work Expenses for reducing countable income, Extended Period of Eligibility for ongoing flexibility, and Expedited Reinstatement if you need to stop working. Each protection addresses a specific concern people have about employment. Together, these incentives create a comprehensive safety net that allows you to pursue work without risking your financial security. Knowing these protections exist - and how to use them - removes the biggest barrier to employment for people with disabilities.

Meet Adrienne, who works for the City of Philadelphia despite having autism. Her employment success demonstrates that public sector positions often provide structured environments that work well for people with autism. Adrienne's story shows the value of matching job characteristics with individual needs and preferences. The stability, clear expectations, and defined responsibilities of government work suited Adrienne's strengths perfectly. Her experience illustrates that successful employment isn't about forcing yourself into any available job - it's about finding positions where your abilities align with job requirements and organizational culture supports your success.

Many people want to work but worry their employer will view them differently once they disclose their disability. Disclosure is a personal decision with important considerations on both sides. You're not required to disclose during the application process unless you need accommodations. However, requesting reasonable accommodations does require sharing relevant information about your disability. Some people choose to disclose upfront to ensure proper supports from day one, while others wait until they've established themselves. There's no single right answer - the decision depends on your specific situation, the nature of your disability, and the accommodations you need. Understanding your rights and options helps you make informed disclosure decisions.

Social Security evaluates work using several factors beyond just earnings. Subsidies occur when you receive extra assistance performing your job that other employees don't require. Special conditions might include modified duties, reduced productivity expectations, or additional supervision. Understanding how these factors affect benefits calculations helps you accurately report your work situation. Some people worry that needing accommodations will hurt their benefits eligibility, but properly documented subsidies and special conditions can actually protect your benefits by reducing your countable earnings. Honest reporting combined with proper documentation ensures Social Security evaluates your work accurately.

Seasonal Affective Disorder affects many people during darker months, impacting both mental health and work performance. Understanding how SAD influences your employment helps you plan accommodations and support strategies. Reasonable accommodations might include flexible scheduling for therapy appointments, adjusted lighting in your workspace, or modified duties during particularly difficult periods. Being proactive about managing SAD at work - rather than waiting until symptoms become overwhelming - leads to better outcomes. Our advisors help you identify workplace supports that address seasonal mental health challenges while maintaining your employment stability and benefit protections.

Medicaid coverage continues for many people even after SSI benefits stop due to work. Section 1619(b) allows you to maintain Medicaid despite earnings that would otherwise end SSI eligibility. Each state sets its own threshold for this protection, but many states allow substantial earnings while keeping healthcare coverage. This protection acknowledges that losing healthcare often represents the biggest barrier to employment for people with disabilities. Understanding your state's specific Medicaid continuation rules helps you pursue higher earnings without sacrificing essential medical coverage. The interaction between work, SSI, and Medicaid requires careful planning to maximize both income and healthcare access.
