Purchase online here. Ink and watercolor on paper. Sailboats rest at anchor while the sky burns down to amber and blood-orange. The masts rise like thin prayers. Is a person forever defined by the worst moment of his life?

My father crossed the Atlantic in the merchant marine, was commissioned in the Coast Guard, and was wounded when a U-boat put a torpedo into his ship. He came home a broken man. He died when I was six years old.

And in the produce aisle of the Red and White grocery store in Watson, Louisiana, I heard two women settle his whole life in six words: "that's that drunkard's boy."

They weren't lying. They just didn't have all the story. They didn't know about a Wednesday night in a pine-board tabernacle with no electricity, twelve or fifteen people, a plumber in overalls praying out loud — and my father on his knees in the sawdust, weeping.

In Matthew 21, our Lord is asked for His credentials and answers with a story about two sons. He ends it by saying the tax collectors and the prostitutes are going into the kingdom ahead of the religious professionals. Not alongside. Ahead.

Heaven will be filled with a company of sinners — trophies of grace, made by God out of portraits of pain.

We are not the sum of our failures.
