The mission of the Paula Takacs Foundation for Sarcoma Research is to raise funds for local research, and amplify awareness, accelerating the fight to eradicate sarcoma cancers. Through these endeavors, we open both local and global pathways for the development of new sarcoma treatments and increase the speed of accurate diagnoses. Paula and Geoffrey Takacs founded the Paula Takacs Foundation for Sarcoma Research in 2010 to fund research and raise awareness for this rare and complex cancer. Paula passed away from sarcoma in April, 2014. It is her legacy that we proudly carry today. To date, the Paula Takacs Foundation has raised almost $4 million for pediatric and adult sarcoma research. The annual Sarcoma Stomp walk/run is the signature event of the Paula Takacs Foundation for Sarcoma Research held each April. Learn more at sarcomastomp.org. Sarcoma is a cancer of the connective tissue, such as bones, muscles, nerves, fat, cartilage, tendons, and blood vessels. Sarcomas comprise less than 1% of adult cancers and about 15-20% of pediatric cancers. Approximately one-half of bone sarcomas and about one-fifth of soft tissue sarcomas are diagnosed in people under the age of 35. The overall relative 5-year survival rate of people with sarcomas is around 50%, a statistic that has not changed in almost five decades. A sarcoma diagnosis can bring more than medical challenges. For patients and families, everyday expenses like housing, groceries, utilities, and transportation can become additional sources of stress during treatment.

That's why the Paula Takacs Foundation partners with Family Reach through our Sarcoma Fund to help eligible North Carolina sarcoma patients facing financial hardship.

Since 2025, 65 families received financial assistance through this partnership.

By helping ease the burden of essential non-medical expenses, we hope to reduce barriers to care and provide meaningful support when families need it most.

🏴‍☠️ A little pirate spirit and a whole lot of generosity! 💙

Held October 16–17 at Ballantyne Country Club, the Women's Member-Guest Magnolia Tournament was filled with pirate-themed golf carts, creative costumes, and plenty of fun!

From osteosarcoma survivor to Foundation Chair. 💙

At just 32 years old, Doug Sleeper was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a rare bone cancer more commonly diagnosed in children and teenagers. His journey included surgery, 22 rounds of chemotherapy, and the unwavering support of his wife, Kim, family, and friends.

Today, Doug serves as Chair of the Paula Takacs Foundation, helping advance sarcoma research and supporting the mission to improve outcomes for patients and families.

His story is one of resilience, community, and finding purpose through life's unexpected challenges.

We're sharing Imerman Angels' Integrative Oncology Resource Guide, a helpful resource for patients, survivors, and caregivers looking for additional ways to support their well-being throughout the cancer journey. 💙

The guide explores evidence-based complementary approaches that can be used alongside conventional cancer treatment, including:

• Nutrition and movement

• Mental and emotional well-being
• Supportive therapies and wellness programs

It also includes links to educational resources, programs, and services to help individuals and families explore available support.

In 2004, just nine days after welcoming her newborn son, Paula Takacs was diagnosed with liposarcoma.

Throughout her cancer journey, Paula endured eight surgeries, more than 100 radiation treatments, and countless doses of chemotherapy. But in the midst of her own battle, she was determined to make a difference for others facing sarcoma.

“I decided that I could either sit and complain about the complete lack of funding and attention to sarcomas, or I could be part of the solution.”

In 2010, Paula founded the Paula Takacs Foundation for Sarcoma Research, bringing together friends, families, and supporters to raise funds for clinical research and build a community for those affected by sarcoma.

Although Paula passed away in 2014, her legacy continues through the work of PTF.

Today, we honor her vision by advancing innovative research, amplifying awareness, and supporting patients and families in the fight against sarcoma.

Her words continue to guide us:

“I want people to think of me as a person who never gave up. Someone who lived with purpose and strove to make a difference in this world.”

More progress in pediatric cancer research! 💙

We're sharing two exciting clinical trial updates from the Beat Childhood Cancer Foundation as additional sites open for patient enrollment.

🔬 **Milwaukee, WI:** Dr. Nathan Schloemer and his team at Children's Wisconsin have been approved to enroll patients in BCC021, a Phase I/II trial studying silmitasertib in combination with chemotherapy for children and young adults with relapsed or refractory solid tumors, including several types of sarcoma.

🔬 **Nashville, TN:** Dr. Daniel Benedetti and his team at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt have been approved to enroll patients in BCC023, a Phase II trial studying eflornithine (DFMO) for Ewing sarcoma and osteosarcoma.

These are two distinct clinical trials exploring potential treatment options for children and young adults facing difficult cancers.
