Did you know some of the nation’s leading adult sickle cell care programs are right here in ?

While life sciences companies continue to research and discover new ways to essentially cure patients of this horrible condition, the Sickle Cell Program at Cooper University Health Care in is at the forefront of diagnosing and treating a disease that affects more than 100,000 people in the United States.

Sickle cell disease is a red blood cell disorder that can cause cells to become crescent-shaped, sometimes blocking blood flow and leading to pain and organ complications. Biopharma companies can now alter a patient’s genes to reverse this process at the cellular level. At Cooper, patients benefit from a highly collaborative model of care, with access to these advanced therapies that are pushing the boundaries of treatment and helping patients.

This is innovation in action – and another example of how New Jersey’s and ecosystem is partnering to move health care forward for patients nationally and around the world.

New Jersey’s life sciences community continues to push the boundaries of medical innovation. PTC Therapeutics, based in Warren, developed the first FDA-approved to be administered directly into the brain.

The treatment, KEBILIDI™, is designed to treat aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase (AADC) deficiency, a rare and severe genetic disorder that can cause developmental delays, movement disorders, and life-threatening complications beginning in infancy. The therapy works by delivering a functional copy of the affected gene directly into the brain, helping patients produce critical neurotransmitters like dopamine.

Clinical trial results showed meaningful improvements in motor function for many pediatric patients, offering new hope to families impacted by this devastating condition. As the “Medicine Chest of the World,” New Jersey continues to pioneer innovations that are transforming patient care.
