Ten Colgate University athletics teams earned perfect four-year 1,000 scores in the NCAA's latest Academic Progress Rates (APR).

The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams. The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport.

“Colgate continues to set a high standard for academic performance, as evidenced by our latest APR results,” said Vice President and Director of Athletics Yariv Amir '01.

COVE is celebrating a quarter century of student-led service at Colgate.

Volunteerism at Colgate through The Max A. Shacknai Center for Outreach, Volunteerism, and Education (COVE) has grown to 783 student volunteers in 2025, with an estimated economic impact of $848,000, building on the service goals initiated by the original Volunteer Colgate board. Contributions from thousands of Colgate students have resulted in more than 635,000 hours of service valued at nearly $18M to Hamilton and its surrounding communities.

“Acts of service or community engagement can be many things — at best they manifest the work of repair, or are small moments of creation,” said COVE Director Jeremy Wattles ’05. “I hope that the COVE and Colgate University can continue to be a place where we work to build a better world for the next 25 years and beyond.”

Yariv Amir '01, vice president and director of athletics, talks with NewsChannel 9 about the Carey Center, a transformative 97,250-square-foot athletics facility that will serve as the new cornerstone of Colgate University’s Division I athletics program.

“Our new athletics plan outlines a series of strategic priorities for Colgate athletics,” said Amir. “One is to provide our student-athletes with a stage on which they can achieve their full potential. The Carey Center will push Colgate ahead even further, which will impact the other commitments in our plan: to attract outstanding student-athletes and provide a Division I experience for all Colgate students.”

Why Do Weather Apps Give Different Forecasts?

"There is a belief that weather forecasting is not good. But meteorologists and modelers take a lot of pride in their work, and they want it to be useful," writes Adam Burnett, William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of geography in Colgate Magazine. "People remember the blown forecasts more than they remember the correct forecasts."

In the U.S., the National Centers for Environmental Prediction uses several models, two of which are the North American Mesoscale model (NAM; designed for short-term forecasting in North America) and the Global Forecast System (GFS; designed for longer-term global modeling). They both yield the same kinds of information, but because they’re designed for different spatial and time scales, they produce different forecasts.

Data at the surface and aloft are collected, and then these data go into the models, thereby influencing the end forecast. Every time the model runs, it uses more updated data. So, the closer you get to a forecast day, the better your forecast gets.

“The student-athlete experience at Colgate is truly unique; it pairs the desire to excel in a sport with discipline, teamwork, and lifelong community,” Steve Errico ’85, P’16,’18 said at the Carey Center groundbreaking.

The 97,250-square-foot Carey Center athletics facility will include:
➡️ Errico Family Arena: A 1,650-seat performance venue for basketball and volleyball featuring a center-hung video board and state-of-the-art broadcast capabilities, and home to Cronin Court

➡️ Expanded Training Spaces: A new strength and conditioning center that is 75% larger than current facilities in Huntington Gymnasium

➡️ Football Operations: A dedicated western wing for the football program, including locker rooms and meeting spaces that will be unique within the Patriot League

➡️ Integrated Sports Medicine: A centralized space for sports medicine and nutrition to improve efficiency for student-athletes

“Colgate athletics create a unique bond and pride that unites students, alumni, faculty, and the broader community,” Chase Carey ’76 said during the ceremony. “Some of Colgate’s greatest memories stem from supporting teams competing for championships. Our student-athletes deserve facilities and resources that match that high standard.”
