On January 26–27, Phyu ThaZin Oo (Iris), Program Coordinator for the Brackett Refugee Education Fund (BREF), met with Mr. Chatchai Raisanguan, Director of Mae Sariang Industrial and Community Education College, as part of our expanding collaboration with Thai vocational institutions. BREF conducted interviews with students applying for Higher Vocational Level scholarships for the 2026–2027 academic year. We are proud to grow this program and build stronger educational pathways for underprivileged students displaced from Burma.

On November 26, 2025, our team shared the BREF Scholarship Program at the Career Fair at Kamphaeng Phet Rajabhat University in Mae Sot, organized by the Cotton On Foundation. The event aimed to support students in exploring diverse educational and career pathways through collaboration with various organizations.

It was a meaningful opportunity for us to introduce our scholarship program, listen to students’ dreams and aspirations, and connect with them through simple yet thoughtful giveaways, such as our BREF logo pens. Each conversation reminded us why this work matters.

New Vocational Scholarship Opportunity!

The Brackett Refugee Education Fund (BREF) is excited to announce a new Higher Vocational Scholarship Program for students who wish to pursue studies at Maesariang Industrial and Community Education College.

Programs Offered:
1. Electrical Engineering
2. Automotive Engineering
3. Construction Engineering
4. Information Technology
5. Accounting

💰 Scholarship Support Includes:
• Partial scholarship covering tuition fees and school materials

👩‍🎓 Eligibility:
• Students from Myanmar or those with a Myanmar family background
• Currently living in Thailand (holding a 10-year card, G-number, or O-number)
• Motivated to learn and contribute to their community
• Have a good academic background
• Enrolled in or accepted to a Higher Vocational level program at Maesariang Industrial and Community Education College

We are pleased to announce that the Bracket Refugee Education Fund (BREF) is now accepting applications for the Vocational Scholarship Program for the 2026–27 academic year at:

🔹 Eligibility Criteria:
1. Students from Myanmar or students whose families originate from Myanmar, including those holding a 10-year card, G-Number, or O-number identification card.
2. Students with strong academic performance
3. Students with a clear personal goal to contribute to community development.
4. Students who demonstrate financial need
5. Students who have been accepted or are enrolling in the Higher Vocational Program at Mae Sot Technical College.

This letter has a succinct summary of the situation in Myanmar since the most recent coup in 2021 and specifically calls on ASEANs newest member to take point on the push for accountability. The signers of this joint letter are at the forefront, indeed they are the backbone of support and advocacy for human rights around the globe. I invite you to read it.

🇹🇱 NEW: As ASEAN prepares to welcome Timor-Leste as its newest member, 37 human rights organizations, including Fortify Rights, are urging President José Ramos-Horta to use the country’s new regional role — and its ICC membership — to push for accountability for atrocity crimes in Myanmar.

The joint letter calls on Timor-Leste to refer the situation in Myanmar to the International Criminal Court and to reject the junta’s planned sham elections in December.

“Timor-Leste has historically taken a strong and principled stance on the situation in Myanmar. ASEAN membership must not weaken Timor-Leste’s commitment to human rights and democracy. Instead, it should use this platform to push for accountability for the crimes taking place in Myanmar.” said Patrick Phongsathorn, Senior Advocate at Fortify Rights.
