The question of student safety for women, people of color, religious minorities, and members of the LGBTQ community has become a major issue given the climate after the recent election, and steps have been taken to create a supportive community and to open up a necessary space for constructive conversation. It has recently come to Brothers’ attention that some of our peers feel that the actions of other students, such as those who participated in the Speak-Out, were threatening their own idea of safety and support. Because of the insensitive nature of these comments, Brothers felt it necessary to present their concerns and opinions to the public, not to out the students for their beliefs, but to show the rhetoric that is being used on the other side. We will not be disclosing the names of the people in this group chat out of consideration for their safety, so do not even bother asking. This is not about them but rather about the language. This is about the blatant disregard for the implications the president-elect will have on people who have been marginalized since the day they were born because of their identities, regardless of their political beliefs. Don’t mistake this for passing judgement on someone’s political belief, this is not a question of partisanship and never has been. The people involved in this group message are people who hold leadership positions on this campus. Combatting this rhetoric is everyone’s duty. If you see or hear something ignorant or offensive, please say something; activism happens on a personal level. There are people in this chat who spoke up, but only when things got egregious -- we cannot afford to be passive in allowing this kind of language to persist in our community. Step up.

Our message addressing the reasons why i) we have chosen to sit in McGregory all day and ii) we have chosen to continue this conversation with our administrators.
"Q: Why are we here?
Last week, the lives of students peacefully protesting on Colgate's campus were threatened anonymously on Yik Yak and through email. Rather than making it an immediate priority to find those responsible for the threats, our administration offered to have campus safety "protect" the students who had been threatened, but these same officers had openly stated they no longer support what those individuals were doing. Administration also suggested that if students did not feel safe on campus they had the option to finish the semester remotely. Because of the threats, and because students had been followed on campus, students are leaving before the semester ends.
These threats both go against student policy and the law so we are here today to demand that those students making threats are held accountable and penalized. We are here to demand that the administration does its best to ensure the safety and well-being of all students on campus.
These are our classmates. These are our friends. We feel their absence, and we will make you see it too. We will make you see that there is a community standing behind these students and the cause for which they spoke up.
We are a part of Colgate. Our friends that have left are also a part of Colgate. They should be here.
A: Because our friends are not. "

Welcome back to Colgate.

I write on behalf of seniors, Melissa Melendez and Kori Strother who are planning a rally on the quad tomorrow from noon to 1:00pm. In light of the recent events in Ferguson and in keeping with the conversation surrounding the university wide reading of Freedom Summer, we invite the Colgate community to demonstrate their solidarity with Ferguson and their commitment to the ongoing fight for equality.

Participants will gather on the quad and raise their hands silently in remembrance of Michael Brown and the many others who have lost their lives. We hope to have your support. Please pass this along to those might be interested.

In solidarity,
the CORE

"I have become anti-romance because I cannot be invested in romantic love, because this investment is dangerous for my mental health. It is perpetual and intimate exposure to the interlocking systems of white supremacy, fat hatred, cissexism and more. Under these systems, my body can’t be neutral, or erotic, or desired without being fetishized beyond context and recognition. Further, my body is invisible in the alternate visions being created by those who wish to dismantle these systems, who are perhaps more invested in them than they/we/I want to admit or recognize."
