School Meals for All NC

Kids who eat school breakfast score about 17.5% higher on math tests, according to No Kid Hungry, and schools running "breakfast after the bell" programs cut chronic absenteeism by an average of six percentage points, with kids attending about a day and a half more school per year. Fed kids show up, focus, and do better. It's that simple. It's one less thing on a parent's plate too, literally: no packing lunch, no scrambling to figure out breakfast before the bus shows up.

NC has made real progress over the last 4 years: the General Assembly eliminated the reduced-price copay, launched a CEP Meal Incentive Program, and added new Farm-to-School funding. South Carolina just went further: this month, the state started funding no-cost breakfast for every K-12 public school student, regardless of family income, for $2.8 million. North Carolina can be next but we need your voice.

New national reporting highlights something a lot of families don't realize is connected: SNAP and free school meals.

When a family loses SNAP, their kids can lose automatic eligibility for free school meals too. And when enough students in a school lose SNAP, the whole school can lose the ability to offer free meals to every student, not just the ones who qualify individually.

According to the article, up to 18.3 million students nationally could be affected this school year. For a family with two kids in school, losing free meals could mean over $2,000 more in food costs this year alone. Miami-Dade County Public Schools has already had to scale back its free meal program for this reason.

Neighbors count on SNAP for groceries at home and reliable meals for their kids at school.
