🩰✨ FREE 1/2 DAY BALLET + JAZZ CLINIC THIS SATURDAY! ✨🎭

Looking for a fun, FREE way for your young artist to move, learn, and build confidence this weekend? (Registration required!)

Battement Your Way to Broadway! is a beginner-friendly ballet and jazz workshop for Grades 4–6, happening Saturday, October 10 from 9:00 AM–1:00 PM at Calliope Stage in Downtown Sylva. No special footwear or clothing needed! Participants are welcome to simply come dressed ready to move and with sneaker and sock options.

Led by WCU Stage & Screen student teaching artists Sophie Temple & Maddie Pearcy, participants will explore foundational ballet and jazz technique through movement games, barre work, across-the-floor exercises, beginner combinations, musicality, coordination, and creative expression. No previous dance experience is required—and it’s also a great brush-up for young dancers who want some extra practice!

Best of all: this workshop is completely FREE! By participating, families not only get access to hands-on arts programming in our community, but also help emerging college teaching artists develop and strengthen their workshop delivery skills. 💛

The Flying Jewels are back!—and this time, things are getting spoooOOOooky.

Join Sylva’s own comedy and improv troupe at Calliope for a night of laughs, improv, Halloween ridiculousness, and whatever else happens once The Flying Jewels take the stage. Whether you’ve seen them countless times or this is your first show, no two nights are ever quite the same.

And because this is Spooky Week, expect a little extra Halloween spirit thrown into the chaos. 🎃

Two FREE workshops are coming up at Calliope — taught by WCU's School of Stage & Screen student teaching artists! 🎭✨

These pop-ups are part of a special series giving WCU students hands-on experience as teaching artists while bringing FREE arts opportunities to young people in our community.

Has your kid or teen ever been tap, jazz, or ballet curious? Both workshops are a great chance to give a new style of dance a try or brush up on foundational skills. ⚠️ ADVANCE REGISTRATION REQUIRED⚠️

TAP FUNdamentals

Ages 14–18

Curious about tap? Start from the beginning! Explore rhythm, foundational steps, and the sounds that make tap such a unique (and seriously fun) art form. No prior tap experience required.

One important note: REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. Because these workshops are part of our student teaching artists’ fieldwork, we need a minimum number of participants registered in advance for each class to go forward.

If your young artist would like to join us, please don’t wait until the day of the workshop — registering early helps us know we have enough participants to hold the class!

We're Hiring - Administrative Assistant Position at Folkmoot, an Arts & Community Cultural Center

Thanks to the North Carolina Arts Council, Folkmoot is able to offer an immediate part-time position for an administrative assistant. This position offers a twenty-hour work week, with the flexibility of either five days a week, four hours a day, or four days a week, five hours a day. You will be the face of the Folkmoot Friendship Center, working in our reception office at 112 Virginia Avenue, so you must be comfortable greeting and interacting with the public, our tenants and their guests. You will oversee the operations of the arts programs, coordinating exhibitions, studio tours, and other community events. In addition, you will be expected to answer telephone enquiries, respond to emails, sort incoming mail, and manage the Folkmoot calendar.

Required skills include the ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize daily work, clear verbal and written skills, experience using Google Workspace (Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Calendar) in a professional or organizational setting, proficiency in software like WordPress, Microsoft Office and basic office equipment, and have the ability to handle sensitive and confidential organizational information. Bonus skills include a love and understanding of art; visual, performing, literary, applied or decorative arts, and a passion for Haywood County.

Halloween costumes can be expensive—and we want more kids in our community to get to experience the fun of choosing a costume, dressing up, and joining in all the Halloween magic our community has to offer.

That’s the idea behind the 6th Annual Halloween Costume Event, organized by Ruby Peoples and proudly hosted this year at Calliope Stage!

On Saturday, October 24, families are invited to stop by and choose from new and gently used Halloween costumes, completely FREE.

No purchase. No need to make a case for why you need one. Just come in, explore the costumes, and hopefully leave with something that makes a kid excited for Halloween. 💜

Our FREE Pop-Up Arts Workshop Series in collaboration with WCU's School of Stage & Screen kicks off next week! 🎉

The first two workshops are now open for registration, and both are designed to give young artists a chance to try something new, build a skill, and have some fun without a long-term commitment.

✨ Flexibility for Everyone! Build Your Stretch Routine
📅 Wednesday, September 30

Led by WCU student artist Sophie Temple

Participants will explore safe, effective stretching techniques, set personal flexibility goals, and begin building a routine they can continue using at home. Whether you dance, act, sing, play an instrument, or just want to move with more ease, learning how to care for your body is an artistic skill, too.
