ARF is a volunteer-driven nonprofit helping dogs and their people in Jackson County, NC. Animal rescue, spay and neuter assistance, public education, adoptions.

We provide low-cost spay/neuter services, rescue and adoption, foster care, and community resources to keep dogs healthy, safe, and home. Our office is located at 84 Green Energy Park, Sylva NC inside of the Jackson County Animal Shelter.

Got a soft spot for hounds? Cherry Garcia would like to have a word with you.

At 4.5 months old and around 30 pounds, Cherry is bringing all the best hound qualities to the table: a nose for adventure, a love of exploring, and an impressive ability to sniff out the comfiest spot next to her favorite human.

This girl loves hiking, playing with other dogs, and paddle boarding. Swimming? She's a hound, not a fish. She prefers her water activities with all four paws above the surface, thank you very much.

Cherry is sweet, affectionate, good on a leash, crate trained, and mostly housetrained. She's expected to grow to around 30 pounds, give or take a little extra room for those ears and that nose!

She's looking for a home with another dog to play with or people who are home often. In return, you'll get an adventure buddy, a cuddle champion, and a four-legged friend who'll probably find every snack you've ever dropped under the couch.

If hounds make your heart howl, Cherry might just be your girl.

Happy tails for Doug (formerly known as Jack)!

Doug has found his forever home with William and his pack! He'll be joining his older siblings for all kinds of adventures, including kayaking, hiking, and exploring the great outdoors.

We couldn't be happier for Doug as he starts this exciting new chapter with his family. Here's to a lifetime of adventures, good company, and all the love a dog could ask for!

Congratulations to William and the whole pack. We're so happy Doug is home!

Pet Safety Alert: A Hidden Danger in Gel Packs and Cooling Pads

Did you know that some reusable hot and cold packs, migraine wraps, and cooling pet pads may contain a substance that can be dangerous to dogs and cats?

The ASPCA is warning pet owners about acrylamide exposure after pets ingested gel from certain products. Even products labeled “nontoxic” or “medical grade” may pose a risk.

Signs of poisoning can include:
Vomiting
Tremors or shaking
Trouble walking or loss of coordination
Unusual sensitivity to touch
Seizures

Severe cases have resulted in death.

How can you protect your pets?
Keep gel packs, cooling pads, and wraps out of reach of curious pets.
Check products regularly for punctures, leaks, or damage.
If your pet chews or swallows one, contact your veterinarian immediately. Save the product and packaging so the ingredients can be identified.
Avoid touching spilled gel with bare hands. Wear nitrile gloves when handling the gel or cleaning an affected pet.

If you suspect exposure, contact ASPCA Animal Poison Control at 888-426-4435 for guidance.

A little prevention can help keep our four-legged family members safe. Please share this warning with other pet owners!

Poppyseed is ready to find a home of her own!

This sweet little mixed-breed girl weighs just 18 pounds, and she has a whole lot of personality packed into that small package. Poppyseed is affectionate, playful, curious, and happiest when she’s with her people.

She loves playing with her foster brother, chewing on her favorite bone, exploring outside, chasing squirrels, and, of course, accepting snacks and pets. When the day winds down, she’s always ready for some good bedtime snuggles.

Poppyseed has made huge progress in her foster home, but she’s still learning what it means to be a house dog. She is mostly potty trained when given plenty of opportunities to go outside, and she’ll need an adopter who is willing to continue working with her on house manners and socialization. She’s doing very well with her foster family’s dog and enjoys having a canine companion.

Poppyseed is the kind of dog who is figuring things out as she goes, and we think she’s going to make someone a wonderful little companion.

She’s ready for her next chapter. Could it be with you?
