Meet Tilly.

Tilly is just over a year old, weighs about 30 pounds, and has spent far too much of her young life waiting for someone to choose her.

For her first year, Tilly lived tied outside. Despite that rough start, she has become one of the friendliest dogs you'll ever meet. She absolutely adores people and would happily trade every treat in the world for a good belly rub. In fact, belly rubs are her love language.

Tilly is playful, affectionate, and always excited to make new friends. She's the kind of dog who wants to be wherever her people are. Whether you're headed for a walk, relaxing on the couch, or running errands, Tilly is ready to be your sidekick. (Just don't be surprised if she gets a little carsick along the way.)

Now that her puppies are weaned and finding homes of their own, it's finally Tilly's turn.

If you're looking for a loyal companion with a huge heart and an endless supply of affection, Tilly may be the perfect match.

Puppies and young children can be adorable together, but they should never be left unsupervised.

Puppies explore the world with their mouths. They nip, chew, jump, and play in ways that can accidentally hurt a child. At the same time, young children may not recognize when a puppy is scared, overwhelmed, or simply needs space.

Many families assume that a puppy is the best choice for a household with small children. In reality, puppies are often a better fit for older children and adults who can help with training, exercise, and supervision. Raising a puppy takes patience, consistency, and a lot of time.

Even the sweetest puppy can react if startled, cornered, or handled too roughly.

The best way to build a lifelong friendship between kids and dogs is through close supervision, gentle interactions, and realistic expectations about what puppy ownership involves.

A few minutes of supervision today can help prevent a lifetime of regret tomorrow.

Keeping your pets vaccinated is one of the simplest ways to protect them and your community.

Our friends at the Jackson County Animal Shelter are hosting a low-cost Vaccine Clinic on Saturday, June 27, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. The clinic is first come, first served, and all vaccines are just $10 each.

Available vaccines:
• Canine Rabies
• Feline Rabies
• Canine Bordetella
• Canine Distemper/Parvo
• Feline HCPCh

Rabies vaccination is especially important. North Carolina law requires all dogs, cats, and ferrets to be vaccinated against rabies by four months of age and remain current throughout their lives. There are no exemptions.

Rabies is present in wildlife throughout our region, making vaccination the best protection for your pets and your family.

Take advantage of this affordable opportunity to keep your pets healthy and up to date on their vaccinations.

Give Local. Save Lives.

Every wagging tail, successful adoption, and low-cost spay/neuter appointment is made possible by people like you.

ARF and Catman2 subsidize spay and neuter services to keep them affordable for local families, helping prevent unwanted litters and reduce pet overpopulation in our community.

We also provide foster homes, medical care, food, and supplies for dogs on their journey to adoption.

As a nonprofit, we rely on donations to make it all happen. If you'd like to help more pets get the care and second chances they deserve, please consider making a donation today.

Your support stays local and changes lives.

Mosquito season is heartworm season.

Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition that affects dogs of all ages. It is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito, which means even dogs that spend most of their time indoors are at risk.

The good news is that heartworm disease is almost entirely preventable. Monthly preventatives prescribed by your veterinarian are safe, effective, and much less costly than treatment. Annual heartworm testing is also an important part of keeping your dog healthy.

As mosquito activity increases throughout the summer, now is a great time to make sure your dog is up to date on heartworm prevention. A few minutes with your veterinarian today can help protect your best friend for years to come.

Update: Rudy has found a wonderful furever home! Thanks to everyone who shared!

COURTESY LISTING

Rudy is looking for a new home, and we'd love to help this great dog find the family he deserves.

At just 9 months old and 35 pounds, Rudy is the perfect medium-sized companion. He's fully vetted, neutered, heartworm negative, housebroken, crate trained, and walks nicely on a leash. He gets along well with other dogs, does well with cats, and already knows several commands, including sit, down, shake, and high-10.

Rudy is smart, eager to please, and loves learning new things. He's also still very much a puppy at heart. He loves to play, splash in the river, carry toys around the house, and generally make life more fun. He's looking for a home that will appreciate his playful personality and give him plenty of opportunities for adventure, exercise, and companionship.

If you're looking for a loyal best friend who is already well-trained but still has all the joy and enthusiasm of a young dog, Rudy may be the perfect match.

To apply for Rudy, please complete ARF's adoption application. Applications will be forwarded directly to his owner for review:

Every litter starts with good intentions. Unfortunately, not every puppy or kitten is guaranteed a safe, loving home.

Spaying and neutering is one of the most effective ways to reduce pet overpopulation, prevent unwanted litters, and help dogs and cats live healthier lives. It can also reduce certain behavioral issues and lower the risk of several serious health conditions.

ARF Humane Society and Catman2 are proud to offer a low-cost spay and neuter program for residents of Jackson, Macon, and Swain counties. Through our partnership with the ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance, qualifying pets can be spayed or neutered for just $20. Rabies vaccinations are available for $5, and additional vaccines and microchips are available for $10 each.

By spaying or neutering your pet, you're helping create a healthier future for your own animal and reducing the number of homeless pets in our community.

To learn more about our low-cost spay and neuter program or to schedule an appointment, visit ARF's website today: https://www.arfhumane.org/spay-neuter.

Summer is rolling in, and so are those dangerously hot days.

When outdoor temperatures climb into the 90s, the inside of a parked car can heat up rapidly—often 20 degrees or more hotter in just minutes. That means a “quick errand” can turn into a life-threatening situation for a dog far faster than most people realize.

Cracking a window doesn’t help enough. Parking in the shade doesn’t last. And a few minutes can be all it takes for heatstroke to set in.

If you see an animal left inside a vehicle on a hot day, take it seriously:

Try to locate the owner immediately
Call 911 or local law enforcement right away
Stay with the vehicle until help arrives, if it is safe to do so

Dogs don’t get a choice about where they’re left—but we can be their backup when things go wrong. One phone call and a few minutes of attention can make all the difference.
