Compassion Starts With Us
Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity, kindness, and compassion— including our neighbors who are experiencing homelessness. ❤️
Homelessness can happen for many reasons, and we may never know the circumstances that brought someone to where they are today. What we can choose is how we respond.
When you encounter someone experiencing homelessness in our community:
🤝 Treat them with respect. A smile, a greeting, or a simple “How are you?” can remind someone that they are seen and valued.
👂 Listen without judgment. You don't have to have all the answers. Sometimes being willing to listen is meaningful.
🥪 Offer help when you can. Consider carrying extra bottled water, snacks, hygiene supplies, socks, or other basic necessities to share.
📍 Connect people with resources. If you know about local shelters, food programs, outreach services, or other community resources, help someone find the information they need.
💙 Volunteer your time. Local organizations and programs depend on community members who are willing to serve, whether that's preparing meals, organizing donations, helping at an event, or simply showing up.
💰 Give what you can. Donations of money, supplies, or needed items can help organizations continue providing essential services.
🏘️ Be part of the solution. Talk about homelessness with compassion rather than judgment. Encourage your friends, family, businesses, churches, and community groups to get involved.
At Here In Jackson County, we believe that caring for our community means caring for all of our neighbors.
We don't have to solve everything overnight. But each of us can do something.
A little compassion can go a long way. And when a community comes together, that compassion can become real change.
