💜 A Day in the Life of Code Purple: Compassion When the Temperatures Drop 💜

When temperatures begin to fall, the cold is more than uncomfortable for someone without a safe, warm place to stay. It can be dangerous.

At Here In Jackson County, our Code Purple program is about more than finding shelter. It is about recognizing the humanity in every person, understanding that everyone deserves warmth and safety, and responding with compassion when our neighbors need us most.

🌡️ When temperatures drop below 32°F, we take action.

Our Code Purple program operates primarily during the winter months, but it also extends into the fall when temperatures dip dangerously low. When the cold sets in, we work to help people get out of the elements by providing access to motel or hotel rooms when available through the program.

Behind every call, every placement, and every effort is a person. Someone with a story, with struggles we may never fully understand, and with the same basic needs we all share.

A warm room can mean more than a roof overhead. It can mean a chance to rest without fear of the cold, a little peace during a difficult time, and the reminder that someone cares.

💜 Compassion means seeing the person, not just their circumstances.

It means treating people with dignity and respect. It means listening without judgment, offering help without shame, and remembering that homelessness does not define a person's worth.

Code Purple is made possible through community support, collaboration, and people who believe that no one should have to face dangerously cold temperatures alone.

As the seasons change and the temperatures begin to fall, we encourage everyone to lead with kindness. You never know what someone may be going through, but a little understanding can make a meaningful difference.

Together, we can help make our community a place where people are cared for, supported, and treated like the human beings they are.

If you are looking for something fun to do, check out the Eat Well Spend Less classes with Uncomplicated Kitchen and St. John's Episcopal Church/Sylva. They are both excellent community members and are doing a great thing by holding these kinds of events for the town of Sylva and our community.

We wanted to give another huge THANK YOU to all of our community partners for donating food for Pasta with a Purpose on Saturday! Special thanks to Foragers, Ilda, Lulu's, Peak Pizza, Quirky Birds, and Speedy's Pizza. All leftover food went to folks in need!

If you weren't able to attend, we're still accepting donations for our vital Code Purple operations (shelter for folks when it's below freezing).

On September 26, 2026, from 4:30–7:30 PM, Here In Jackson County will host Pasta With Purpose, a spaghetti dinner and community fundraising event at First United Methodist Church in Sylva, NC.

And one of the highlights of the evening will be our Silent Auction! 🎉

We are looking for local businesses, organizations, artists, makers, families, and community members who would like to donate an item, experience, gift certificate, or basket to help make our Silent Auction a success.
