Today we remember K9 Jax, loyal partner, faithful protector, and beloved member of our DPS family. Jax gave his life serving the Sunnyvale community on October 31, 2017.

Jax was 4 years old, served our department for two years and had helped in 26 arrests. He truly loved his job, it was evident with every search he did. At Jax's funeral service his handler, Officer Eckford, said "The last personality Jax had was bravery, courage, and unwavering determination. Not a day has gone by where I don't wish he was in the back of my car again."

Please join us in remembering and honoring our hero dog Jax today. Rest easy, good boy.

Today, on national first responders day, we’re proud to share the story of the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety (DPS) and the unique model that has served our community for more than 75 years.

Established in June 1950, Sunnyvale DPS became the first law enforcement agency in California to adopt a fully integrated public safety model. Before its creation, Sunnyvale maintained a small police department and a volunteer fire department.

What makes Sunnyvale DPS unique? Our Public Safety Officers (PSOs) are cross-trained in law enforcement, firefighting, and emergency medical services (EMT). This integrated approach allows our officers to transition between roles, respond to fires and medical emergencies directly from patrol units, and use specialized equipment as each situation demands.

By combining these essential services under one department, Sunnyvale DPS delivers comprehensive, high-quality public safety services while providing a more cost-effective model than maintaining separate police and fire departments.

We’re proud to serve as Public Safety Officers and dispatchers, and we’re honored to serve the Sunnyvale community every day.

The streets around Laurelwood were a little more lively yesterday! 150 students walked, biked, and rolled to school for Walk & Roll Day, and we were right there with them chatting with families, cheering on students, and enjoying a great morning with our community. Thanks for the invite, Laurelwood!
