Bike/Walk Wednesday Spotlight: Meet the Summerville PD Bike Team! 🚲👮‍♂️✨

Ever spotted officers cruising through Azalea Square or along Sawmill Branch Trail on two wheels? That is the Summerville Police Department Bike Team in action!

We caught up with Summerville Police Department officer Anthony Tomlinson to get the inside scoop on how riding on two wheels makes Summerville safer and more connected for everyone.

🚴‍♂️ Why Two Wheels Beats Four
Accessing Hard-to-Reach Places: Standard patrol cruisers are great on main roads, but bikes go where cars can't! You'll see officers patrolling crowded shopping centers like Azalea Square and North Main Market during heavy holiday shopping times, special events, and local parks.

Trail & Neighborhoods: The Sawmill Branch Trail connects several neighborhoods and parks across Summerville. Riding on bikes allows officers to patrol these greenways and roll right into nearby residential streets to stay connected with neighbors.

Community Education & Safety: These officers are well-versed in South Carolina bicycle laws. They serve as approachable, knowledgeable resources to share practical safety tips and educate riders of all ages!

💡 Did You Know? According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), bicycle patrols increase police visibility by up to twice as much as traditional vehicle patrols, while fostering 7 to 10 times more positive community interactions per shift! 📊

20 miles of Summer's Corner smiles this past weekend! 🚲✨

Our latest Long Ride took us through the beautiful Summers Corner area. We logged serious saddle time, explored custom handmade routes around Summerville, and wrapped up the day the best way we know how—refueling with a well-deserved lunch at a local spot! 🥪🥤

Every single ride we host is diverse, family-friendly, and a direct reflection of the safe, connected streets we want to see in Summerville.

On this week's Bike/Walk Wednesday, we are shining a light on night lighting! 🌙🚸

Did you know that in South Carolina, an astonishing 83% of pedestrian fatal crashes occur during dark conditions? (Source: FHWA Safety Data).

When the sun goes down, our street design is put to the ultimate test. But as advocates, we have proven, evidence-based engineering tools that can turn those statistics around:

High-Visibility Markings & Lighting: Combining dedicated crosswalk lighting with high-visibility pavement markings and advance yield signs reduces pedestrian crashes by 25%.

Adding RRFBs: Layering Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) into that mix slashes crashes by up to 47%!

Prioritizing foot traffic: We're talking about 🏫 Crosswalks near schools, 🚌 Transit stops,🌳 Parks & community hubs,🛍️ Dense commercial shopping districts

A Milestone for our Nonprofit and Our Community! ✂️🎉

On August 12, Bike/Walk Summerville officially celebrated the ribbon-cutting ceremony for a brand new bench on the Sawmill Branch Trail! Bike/Walk Summerville Board Members and volunteers, The Summerville Journal Scene, and Home Telecom joined us to mark the occasion and make it known to all!
Without Home Telecom’s sponsorship of the bench, and Summerville Parks and Recreation installation, we could not have done this on our own.

We’re not just excited about making our mark on Summerville, but the bench represents so much more! Infrastructure like this transforms a walking trail into a welcoming community space! A single bench gives trail users of all ages and abilities a much-needed spot to catch their breath, rest during long miles of biking or walking, and connect with fellow neighbors outdoors. It’s more than just a place to sit—it’s a step towards a safer, more accessible, and closely connected trail community! 🌳🎉

🚨 ONLY 48 HOURS LEFT to influence $213M in Dorchester County road plans! 🚨

Dorchester County is finalizing plans for US17A Boone Hill Road, but key pedestrian crossings and slow-traffic designs are currently missing around Summerville High and local neighborhoods.

Public comments close in 2 DAYS.

Impacted Corridors:

- Summerville High School area

- The Ponds neighborhood

-Orangeburg Rd, Berlin G. Myers, & US-78

We’ve combed through the engineering drawings available on the website, and we have 3 BIG ASKS we need your help with!

1. Protect Students & Walkers at Summerville High School: We are asking Dorchester County to either reduce the 3-lane section from Luden Dr to Orangeburg Road to 2-lanes, or provide crosswalks and ways to slow down cars in this section!

2. Support the Sidewalks: Dorchester County needs to KNOW that we value the 12 foot sidewalks and paths given in the plans!

3. Include Street Trees on 4-lane sections: Plant shade trees along the 4-lane corridors to reduce traffic noise and have shade for our cyclists and walkers.

On this Bike/Walk Wednesday: Can cyclists run red lights now???

Earlier this year, S.812 was signed into law, making South Carolina the 14th state in the US (and the first on the East Coast!) to pass comprehensive "Stop-As-Yield" safety legislation!

So, what does this actually mean for people riding bikes in Summerville? 👇

📜 What SC Law (S.812) Allows

Stop Signs 🛑 ➡️ 🔺: Bicyclists may treat stop signs as yield signs when it is clear and safe to do so. (Ex. Slowing at a stop, and rolling when no cars are present)

Red Lights 🔴 ➡️ 🟢: Bicyclists must come to a full stop at a red light, but after checking that all traffic/pedestrians are clear, they may proceed through the intersection.

We know what you might be thinking: “Does that mean bikes can blow through stop signs?”
NO. Blowing through intersections or riding recklessly remains 100% illegal. People on bikes must still yield to pedestrians and cross-traffic that have the right-of-way. If another vehicle or pedestrian is at the intersection, the bicyclist must wait their turn!

Research from US DOT shows that Stop-As-Yield laws reduce the time that bicyclists have to be in intersections, where most crashes involving bike riders occur.

🚴‍♂️ Aug 8th Ride Recap!

What a fantastic day we had on our ride Saturday! The overcast sky gave us a cool, comfortable breeze and a break from the scorching heat, making every mile pure bliss! We also had an amazing time grabbing lunch at the market!

What is the Farmers Market Ride? It’s a casual, family-friendly group ride that happens every 2nd Saturday where we ride to the Farmers Market and support our local vendors! When we do these rides, we continue to show that bikes can be a mode of transportation when safe to do so and encourage new riders to feel confident on the road!

Huge thanks to everyone who came out! We’ll see you at our long ride on Aug 22!

Welcome to our very first Bike/Walk Wednesday! 🚲🚶‍♀️

Every Wednesday, we’re bringing you practical, educational content as part of our ongoing advocacy program. Our goal is to promote bike and pedestrian safety, keep you updated on local street infrastructure, share new laws affecting bicyclists and pedestrians, and show our community how to navigate the streets safely and confidently!

To kick off our series, we’re diving into a topic that’s crucial for those spending time outdoors: preventing heat exhaustion.

Here is how to keep yourself safe:

💦 Hydrate before you feel thirsty: Start drinking water, especially THE DAY BEFORE before you head out, not just while you’re moving

☀️ Avoid peak hours! Plan your activities for early morning or late evening when temperatures are lower, or find shade while shopping during these hours!

👕 Dress for the weather: Wear lightweight, light-colored, and breathable moisture-wicking clothing, sunglasses and sunscreen!

⚠️ Listen to your body: Dizziness, heavy sweating, or nausea means it’s time to STOP and find shade!

🚴‍♂️ Farmers Market Ride: Every 2nd Saturday! 🧺✨

Join us this Saturday for some community fun as we ride through the Sawmill Branch Trail to the Farmers Market! This slow roll occurs every 2nd Saturday and is ideal for families, casual cyclists, and anyone looking to gain confidence riding on the road! Don’t forget to grab lunch with us afterwards! 🍔

Our mission: To show that the Farmers Market Ride is a casual, slow-paced ride for all ages and abilities—including newbies—while supporting local businesses and demonstrating that biking can be a safe mode of transportation when it's safe to do so!
