Discover Saint Charles, Mo Saint Charles, Missouri - City Government Visit Ludwigsburg Elmar Kunz Midwest Maifest

For 30 years, the sister cities of St. Charles, Missouri, and Ludwigsburg, Germany, have demonstrated how German-American connections can grow into lasting friendships between communities. Through student exchanges, cultural visits, civic partnerships, and even shared culinary traditions, the two cities have built a relationship that continues to bring people together across the Atlantic.

One of the partnership’s most enduring traditions is its student exchange program, which has brought hundreds of young people from St. Charles and Ludwigsburg together through international travel, homestays, and cultural immersion. Students experience everyday life in their partner city while participating in school classes, practicing language skills, exploring history and geography, and discovering German and American culture firsthand. The next cycle of exchanges is planned for 2027–2028, with discussions underway to expand the program through a new local school district.

The partnership extends well beyond student exchanges. Over the years, St. Charles and Ludwigsburg have welcomed numerous adult delegations and cultural groups, including the Philharmonic Choir of Ludwigsburg and the Ludwigsburg Zither Club, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2019. In 2024, two St. Charles-area brewers traveled to Ludwigsburg to learn about traditional German brewing and the principles of the Reinheitsgebot, Germany’s historic b**r purity law dating to 1516.

Today, the cities are finding new ways to share their traditions. Their upcoming “Baking Bridges” exchange will bring two to three German bakers to St. Charles in late winter or early spring to work alongside local bakers. In fall 2027, St. Charles bakers are expected to travel to Germany for the next chapter of this delicious cultural exchange.

The connection can also be seen in the cities themselves. St. Charles’ German heritage is reflected throughout the community, from German-named streets to historic buildings constructed, owned, and occupied by German immigrants during the 1800s. Historic plaques along Main Street and in Frenchtown help tell these stories. In Ludwigsburg, the partnership is commemorated through St.-Charles-Ring and MissouriStrasse in Pattonville, an area shaped by interactions between American families and German communities following World War II.

The cities continue to celebrate their shared connection together. Just two weeks ago, St. Charles unveiled a permanent Maibaum in Frontier Park, honoring the community’s rich German heritage and the traditions that continue to connect St. Charles with Ludwigsburg. Each year, St. Charles–Ludwigsburg Sister Cities also hosts a Midwest Maifest to support international exchanges and cultural programming, with the next celebration scheduled for May 2, 2027, at Shire Lane Estate in New Town.

Looking ahead, civic and tourism leaders from both cities are preparing to deepen their collaboration. Ludwigsburg’s Tourism Director has visited St. Charles twice and plans to return in 2027 to explore opportunities for greater cross-promotion, while the Lord Mayor of Ludwigsburg is also expected to return to strengthen civic cooperation and share strategies between the two communities.

For three decades, St. Charles and Ludwigsburg have shown that sister-city diplomacy is about much more than a name on a map. It is built through students staying with host families, musicians sharing their traditions, professionals learning from one another, bakers creating new friendships, and communities celebrating the heritage they share. During German-American Heritage Month, their story is a reminder that cultural connections are strongest when people have the opportunity to meet, learn, and build something together.
