Prevention looks like a lot of different things.

It looks like a young person who has a trusted adult to talk to. A family that talks openly about substance use without shame. A community where people feel connected enough that they don't need to numb out to get through the day.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and we want to name something that often goes unspoken:

Domestic violence and substance use are deeply connected. Trauma from abuse can lead to substance use as a way to cope. And substance use within a home can increase the risk of violence.

Neither is a character flaw. Both deserve support, compassion, and access to real help.

Unused or expired medications in the home can be a risk — especially in households where someone is in recovery or where young people have access to them.

Safe disposal is simple and free. The DEA hosts Take Back Day events at locations across the country, and many pharmacies have permanent drop-off boxes.
