Wyandotte proudly celebrates its Purple Heart heritage 💜

The Purple Heart is awarded to servicemembers who are wounded or killed as a result of enemy action while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. First established by George Washington in 1782, it remains our nation’s oldest military decoration still awarded today. This distinction symbolizes bravery, sacrifice, and unwavering service to our country.

Wyandotte is truly honored to be recognized as a Purple Heart City and to have been the first city in the nation to receive a monument of this kind. The statue, refurbished in 2010, was originally commissioned and generously donated by the national Military Order of the Purple Heart in 1943 under then-Michigan Gov. Harry Kelly.

Tonight at 6 p.m., we gather at the Purple Heart Memorial Garden (Biddle Avenue and Superior Boulevard) to honor our nation's Purple Heart recipients. Residents and visitors are invited and encouraged to attend.

They leave work early. They drive hundreds of miles. They purchase uniforms, fuel, and equipment—often out of their own pockets—all to ensure a fellow veteran receives the dignity they earned.

They don’t ask for recognition.

They simply ask that no veteran be forgotten.

🇺🇸 There are moments that become lifelong memories.

This is one of them.

Bring your children or grandchildren to one of the nine viewing locations shown on this poster and watch The Wall That Heals make its way to Heritage Park, escorted by hundreds of motorcycles.

Let them see a community come together to honor courage, sacrifice, and service. Let them witness a Welcome Home that is more than fifty years overdue.

Please arrive early. All times are approximate.
