🚨🐾 ARSENIC POISONING IN DOGS: A HIDDEN DANGER THAT CAN TURN DEADLY FAST!

When we think about poisoning in dogs, we often think of chocolate, medications, or household cleaners. But what about arsenic?

Arsenic is a highly toxic substance that can cause devastating damage to a dog’s gastrointestinal system, cardiovascular system, and vital organs. Depending on the type and amount of exposure, symptoms can develop within just a few hours.

⚠️ WHAT SHOULD YOU WATCH FOR?

🐾 Severe or persistent vomiting

🐾 Diarrhea, sometimes containing blood

🐾 Significant abdominal pain

🐾 Extreme weakness or lethargy

🐾 Pale gums, dehydration, or collapse

🐾 In severe cases, shock, organ failure, and death

☠️ WHERE CAN DOGS ENCOUNTER ARSENIC?

Although arsenic poisoning is relatively uncommon today, exposure can occur through certain older pesticides, contaminated soil or water, industrial materials, and improperly discarded chemicals.

⏰ TIME IS EVERYTHING!

Arsenic poisoning is a true veterinary emergency. The longer a toxin remains in the body, the greater the potential for serious damage.

Early intervention can make a tremendous difference in a dog’s prognosis. Treatment may involve decontamination, IV fluid therapy, medications, intensive monitoring, and, in certain cases, specialized treatment to help remove arsenic from the body.

🚫 NEVER attempt to induce vomiting or administer home remedies unless specifically instructed by a veterinarian or animal poison control specialist.

If you suspect your dog has been exposed, DO NOT wait for symptoms to appear. Seek emergency veterinary care immediately.

🚨 ERF EDUCATION: IVDH — When a Disc Becomes an Emergency

Intervertebral Disc Herniation (IVDH) occurs when material from a disc between the vertebrae protrudes or ruptures into the spinal canal, potentially putting pressure on the spinal cord and nerves.

And when neurological function begins to change, time matters.

Signs can include:
🐾 Sudden or severe neck/back pain
🐾 Crying out or reluctance to move
🐾 A wobbly or uncoordinated gait
🐾 Weakness in one or more limbs
🐾 Knuckling or dragging the feet/legs
🐾 Inability to stand or walk
🐾 Loss of bladder or bowel control
🐾 In severe cases, paralysis

Although IVDD is often associated with small, long-backed breeds, disc herniation can absolutely occur in larger dogs as well.

Not every herniated disc requires surgery. Mild cases may sometimes be managed with strict rest, pain control and veterinary supervision. However, significant spinal cord compression or worsening neurological deficits may require advanced imaging and emergency surgical decompression.

The important part is knowing when not to wait.

If your dog suddenly cannot walk normally, develops significant weakness, begins dragging a limb, becomes acutely painful or loses bladder/bowel function, this is not something to “watch for a few days.” Seek veterinary or emergency veterinary care immediately.

With spinal cord injuries, neurological status at the time of treatment can have a major impact on prognosis. Early recognition gives your dog the best opportunity for appropriate treatment and recovery.

🩸 VON WILLEBRAND DISEASE (vWD): Know the risk before there’s an emergency.

Von Willebrand disease is an inherited bleeding disorder that affects the blood’s ability to clot normally. A dog can look completely healthy and you may never know there is a problem until an injury, dental procedure, spay/neuter, ear crop, or other surgery causes prolonged or excessive bleeding.

Doberman Pinschers are one of the breeds most commonly associated with Type 1 vWD, which is why genetic screening is so important in responsible breeding programs.

Other breeds with recognized increased risk or documented breed predisposition include:

• German Shepherd Dogs
• Standard Poodles
• Shetland Sheepdogs
• Scottish Terriers
• Golden Retrievers
• Pembroke Welsh Corgis
• Manchester Terriers
• Miniature Schnauzers
• Chesapeake Bay Retrievers
• Bernese Mountain Dogs
• German Shorthaired Pointers
• Drentsche Patrijshond
• Kooikerhondje

🧬 DNA testing matters — but so does pre-surgical planning.

Genetic testing can identify inherited vWD variants and help breeders make informed breeding decisions. Depending on the dog, breed, and situation, veterinarians may also recommend testing von Willebrand factor antigen (vWF:Ag) and/or other coagulation or platelet-function testing before a procedure when bleeding risk is a concern.

Knowing a dog’s status before surgery gives the veterinary team an opportunity to prepare for potential bleeding rather than discovering the problem during an emergency.

There is no reason to guess when we have tools available to identify risk.

Newest Update from Isenhower’s Family:

The surgeon called around 3:15.

He still has his urinary, catheter in place for sanitation reasons. He is eating normally. Still not willing to get up on his own. But will take a few steps after he is picked up.

He is being loved on by all the staff.

He will remain in their care another night.

We have been informed of the amount of rehabilitation he will require in the next few months.

Isenhower did well over night. The Dr is going to wean him off IV pain meds this morning. They mentioned him not wanting to get up on his own. But he is tolerating all the poking, exams, and maneuvering around they've done with him over night. She said she would call us around lunch time. For more updates.

Isenhower made it out of surgery successfully and is in the recovery & healing phase

He will remain hospitalized a few more days since it was such a big orthopedic surgery. We will continue to accept donations for his care while he’s hospitalized to help offset the balance for his family.

Isenhower will be able to get his necessary surgery if we can raise just a little bit more money, we had an additional 500 coming overnight, which leaves us just 300 short from being able to get him on the surgery schedule. Of course, this only covers the cost of the surgery but not the remaining hospitalization. We are hoping to help close the gap for the family as much as we can.

You can contribute to his care by donating through our embers donation link https://www.emberreignfoundation.org/embers any donations coming in since yesterday and on will go towards his care while he’s in the hospital.

Currently, he has a urinary catheter in place, he is getting IV fluids, and pain medication around the clock to help Keep him stable.

The goal and hope is that he will get surgery by this afternoon so that he can begin his healing process
