Friends of the Detroit River are gearing up for the Fall Detroit River Water Festival, and we need YOUR help to make it a splashing success! Whether you're passionate about conservation, love the outdoors, or simply want to give back to our community, this is your chance to make a difference. 💧

What a great day on the water! Thank you to everyone who joined us for Kayaking Downriver Wetlands on Saturday, August 8th. We had 15 paddlers join us for a beautiful day exploring the Detroit River and wetlands around Grosse Ile and Sugar Island.

A special thank you to our partners at Grosse Ile Nature & Land Conservancy and Friends of the Detroit River for helping make this trip possible and for their continued work connecting our communities to the Detroit River and protecting our local natural areas.

We also want to give a huge shoutout to Michael Polite for capturing some incredible drone footage of the trip! The aerial views really show just how beautiful and special this stretch of the Detroit River is.

And of course, thank you to Hoover's Marina for allowing us to launch from their location and helping make the trip possible.

We hope everyone had a great time on the water, and we look forward to seeing you at another Downriver Linked Greenways or Friends of the Detroit River event soon!

Last Call – Only a Few Spots Left!

There's still time to register for Kayaking Downriver Wetlands this Saturday, August 8! We have just a few spots remaining for this guided paddle exploring the wetlands surrounding Sugar Island on the south end of Grosse Ile.

This route offers a unique opportunity to experience one of Downriver's beautiful natural areas along the Detroit River. Please note this trip is intended for experienced paddlers who are comfortable paddling in open water and changing conditions.

What a fantastic morning on the water!

This past weekend, Downriver Linked Greenways, in partnership with Friends of the Detroit River , welcomed 15 participants for our Rowing Downriver paddle through the beautiful Gibraltar canals—where the Detroit River and Lake Erie meet.

Paddlers had the opportunity to experience one of Downriver's most unique waterways, exploring peaceful canals, taking in incredible natural scenery, and learning more about the region's rich aquatic ecosystem. It was a wonderful day to connect people with the waterways that make our Downriver communities so special.

The opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge represents an exciting new opportunity for pedestrians and cyclists to connect the United States and Canada. This historic crossing will create a new link for people to explore, commute, and experience the region by trail.

In this video, Destination Downriver speaks with Downriver resident and trail advocate John Hartig about the significance of this international connection and what it means for the future of trail connectivity in our region.

As Downriver continues to expand its trail network, these connections will help create new opportunities for residents and visitors to travel between communities, explore the Detroit River corridor, and experience destinations on both sides of the border.
